Technical question: will new masks require a mask cord or will it be assumed that the underside of the bib will make contact with the lame? The latter might lead to some dangerous defense.

The strong recommendation of the Medical Comission was that a mask cord will be required.

Especially since if you tilt your head back, you'd lose contact.
Need fencing equipment? See me at H.O.M. Fencing Supply

Going to your first tournament? Read "Choose yer weapon, Laddie (or: Dude, where's my foil?)"

And why would the Medical Commision care about that?

You try to avoid a valid touch so you tilt you head back to break contact b/w lamé and bib. By tilting your head back, you (potentially) expose your throat.

Perhaps they should find a happy medium in between the old foil timings and the new ones.

Isn't it in the bylaws that moderation isn't allowed in the FIE (or any small organization with petty politics)?

Yes, thanks. One usually begets the other, though.
