I always thought the single blade cover bag things (they're sold here on the site) make a great gift. -

Array "I Am America and So Can You" Another fun gift that mentions fencing....
Fencing is found on page 82-I'll quote so you don't really have to buy the book.... "FENCING: I like the concept. I don't like the masks, or protective jumpsuits, and for God sake use a real sword, not those effete little French things. I mean, does "epee" sound like something you could open an artery with? You need a blade that wouln't embarrass a pirate, or maybe even one of those martial arts swords that looks like a long walking stick but when a guy tries to attack you, you pull it apart and whoosh! It's actually two swords. Speaking of martial arts, a few throwing stars couldn't hurt fencing, or any sport for that matter. And can we please get rid of that ridiculous electronic scoring system that uses sensors to tell us someone has made a hit? That's what blood is for.
*ducking and running from Colbert's henchmen and originator of the thread*....now I must wrap this gift....

Array I think the ideas that have been shared are great. As a coach I highly recommend the fencing journal idea, if you can convince your child to write in it. I also think completing his outfit of protective gear is a good idea, knickers and plastron if he doesn't have them.
You might also consider buying a DVD of fencing footage. While at the age of 11 the students won't get as much out of them as an adult, it's still really neat to watch and show their friends.
I did see a fencing Christmas ornament on www.cafepress.com. It was two snowmen fencing.
You might consider a pin, like a lapel pin, to attach to your student's backpack. I actually found an Olympic fencing pin at a sprots store at the Mall of America. Some of the fencing websites also sell them. Or you could get a fencing keychain to put a bus pass on.
Just a few thoughts! The Lady Riposter

Not the words, but the rhythms and pitches. It's the intro to 'Africa,' the Toto song they adapt for the finish.

I started fencing in 1967 and asked my folks for fencing equipment for Christmas. Christmas morning, I woke up and beside my stocking was:
Wire stretchers
tack hammer
extra wire
gloves
All the stuff needed for barb wire fencing. Remember, this was Texas -

I am now going to email this video to everyone I know ... and a few people I don't! I listen to the video a couple times a day. I really enjoy how well those guys sing. They could use a little help with choreography though. Half the time, they are moving opposite ways of each other. Good thing they sing well. Very well as a matter of fact.
Good pitch is good for the soul.

Aw, that just adds to the 'fun' factor. If they danced well, too, it would distract from the singing. Really. Or something. Originally Posted by Mo Good pitch is good for the soul. Amen to that!
