It is the fine art of holding a French Grip mostly by the pommel, or very far to the rear and is pretty much exclusive to epee. The benefits are extra reach and the ability to pull odd angles of attack/counter but the downsides are a lack of power and ability to resist actions against the blade or execute same. Or so I have heard...

Stereotypically, pommeled fencers are snipers, waiting for the chance to counterattack and very rarely attacking themselves. Reality tends to be bit different and dependent on the fencer although most pommeled fencers tend to be more defensive than offensive.

I think Inq would say all epee fencers are offensive.
