| It turns out that the one driving is required by the school to be 24 or older. Hmmm. I still feel strange about that. My coach would actually prefer if we went by ourselves. We don't have nearly enough people to warrant a bus, so we're renting cars. Less cars to rent = less coming out of our yearly budget.
It doesn't really matter in this particular instance because it just so happens that my mom's friend lives in the city we're going to, and my mom was going to go see her friend anyway. But --- still!
As my friend said to me - I can drink, smoke, gamble, vote, and go to prison, but I need my mommy to give me a ride =P
Edit: By the by, HG is a girl. Or a "lady" if you will (har har). Not that I really mind being mistaken (it's hardly easy to tell by my s/n, I know), but thought I'd throw that out there.

OTOH, I think it quite likely that it's not this fencing coach's personal rule, but rather one foisted on him by the Athletic Department--and that they likely have their reasons for making the rule (generally to discourage non-team travel).

I am just struggling to see what the problem is and how anyone could seriously suggest this. I even whimsically suspect that Heavenguard may be the subject of an elaborate prank! |

| Ohhhh. Yes. Some companies that rent cars require the driver to at least 24 years old. The school is following that policy.
Why are you all renting cars? Wouldn't it be cheaper for the club for everyone to just take their own or car pool?

| It's not really all that related to the car rental policy so much as policies that most major universities have wrt travel (at least for varsity teams). In theory the school can't really sanction you to travel on your own to events anyway. Also, in theory, you are the ward of your coach and school as soon as you embark on a trip with your team and remain so until you return. So, no, you're not really an independent adult while traveling and representing your university. Similarly I wouldn't be surprised if you're still listed on your parents insurance and income tax returns despite your apparent adulthood...suspending some of your privileges as an independent adult is a double-edged sword no?
That being said, if you were to "miss the bus" and had to drive up with several friends I don't think you'd have a problem BUT you'd have to stay with the team from the point that you rejoined them until they returned home OR have your legal guardian render a written release to your coach. If you don't have anyone acting as your legal guardian (i.e. you're not on anyone's tax return as a dependent or insurance policy etc) you might be able to avoid the release part.

| Why couldn't the coach be the driver, if it's so important it has to be an adult (ie. more adult than...adult ) driver. He'll know you got there safely, plus he can also help coach.

I'm 21 and I need my mommy to drive me around ...? Did I slip into some parallel universe where the age of majority is like 35 or something?? What the heck??? | My school had (well, still does, I'm just gone) the policy that all driving to competitions had to be driven by authorized drivers. You became an authorized driver by submitting a copy of your insurance and driving record to RecSports. |

| How do other sport teams handle travel to and from venues? I'd double check with Administration. But you have to follow the rules, it's the best course of action. Universities have teams of Lawyers who've worked out all the liability beforehand and they know more.

| I'm 16, still don't have my license (haven't gotten around to taking behind the wheel yet), and my parents have never seen me fence. Yet you're 21, and they want you to bring mommy? That's a little weird... (Oh yeah, at my club, you can do whatever you want to get there once you're 18, you just have to tell the coach and you can't drive any other fencers untill you're 21).

As I've said before, regardless of age and how annoying it may be, the university is responsible for every team member. While the OP is probably responsible enough to drive to a tournament alone, this whole case sounds like a policy set by the university to make sure its ass is covered.

I got drafted into being the President of my university's club. I got to learn all about policies and paperwork.

Besides the fact that my mom brakes at inappropriate times (ie when there are no cars or reds around ... I'll never understand), I got there rather uneventfully with her driving. But I drove back >_>
... And while we're here, I seeded and placed last. But whatever. *shrug* I pretty much expected as much, being a 2 month newbie into it, fencing against people who've been in it for years. But I had a lot of fun, and had some laughs with my teammates
