Stoves/ovens

My dad has challenged me with the task of finding the best oven/stove for $400-$800. Unfortunately I have NO experience what so ever with the subject.

I know quite a few of you cook so I was hoping you could help me out.

Hate to tell you, but you're better off just going to Home Depot or Lowe's or the local store of your choice for this sort of thing. We could tell you the best stove in the world, but if it isn't available for you to go get, that doesn't mean anything.

It's hard to go wrong with a sealed burner gas stove (must be sealed, not open, or it's a nightmare to clean!), or a flat-top electric where the burners are nearly invisible under the top element.

Don't forget to measure the opening in the cabinetry...it makes a difference in the model you'll want to look at.

Definately sealed burners. I like a convection oven as well.

Otherwise check out Consumer Reports. They will have a grid and everything outlining the realtive merits of stoves in your price-range. Worth the $30 to join on-line for the year.

Invoice amount as reported to your Dad: $300.

I like these: http://www.aga-ranges.com/ at least in theory, but they're out of your budget. I don't know much about household stoves, but if there's a Vulcan or US Range for that price, it's probably pretty good. You might also consider a commercial range from ebay. Even well used but clean, a commercial range will last for a Loooooong Time. (You'll need a hood, though...)

(laughing) saying that "you'll need a hood" with a Viking range is a bit of an understatement...what chefencer is saying is that you'll need something a little more substantial than a 24", $99 unit from Sears.

We went with a standard electric (not a flat top) from sears.

Go mediocrity!
