Just curious... Can residents of the United States who are not citizens fence in summer nationals? Are any other competitions restricted by nationality?
Does anyone know anything about how other countries handle this? -
In GB you have to be a UK citizen to fence in he National Championship at Junior, Senior or Cadet level, but you don't have to be resident.
The exception is the British Youth Championships (U18, U16, U14, U12, U10) where you have to be resident but not a citizen, so it's open to those at boarding schools of any nationality. This is a hangover from the days when it was the National Schools Championships. -

Array This has not always been the case. FIE Vice-President Max Geuter, Foil National Champion, is one of about half a dozen non-citizens who have won US National Championships. Whoopee! My avatar is back. -

Array I'm a permanent resident and I fence summer nationals. You need to put down your INS # on the registration form if you're not a citizen. -
I think it’s great that US opens the door to all residents. Where we live this is not the case. It is extremely hard for children to maintain enthusiasm for sport (or home nation) when excluded from virtually all higher-level competitions, all ranking lists, and all development programs. Children here hit a glass ceiling almost as soon as they pick up a weapon.
It shows self-confidence and generosity as a nation to allow everyone in. The national championship should display the best fencing that nation has to offer. Excluding talented residents only weakens the level of competition and the ultimate quality of the prize won. -

You seem very reluctant to tell which country you live in so I will randomly assume you're living in Germany. It is the one country I can think of off the top of my head that does restrict non-citizens to participate in their nationals. -

Array I'm not sure that constitutes "random"....

Does anyone know anything about how other countries handle this? Permanent Residents (folks with green cards) are allowed to enter summer nationals... whether what they do, once entered, should be called fencing is another matter all together. I'm Tripod and you're not.
I wonder why they call me that. -
Zz accidentally used a Swedish word that happens to be spelled the same as an English one. Similar Threads -
