| What would you have done in my place? A friend asked me last week if I was practicing fencing to which I replied yes,and then he said in a serious and not mocking way, isnīt it a gay game?(because he thought we played around with swords and didnīt know it was a sport).
I said hell no and said goodbye.
How would you have reacted to my friendīs comment? |

| Possible Rebuttal 1: Have you seen the girls of fencing?
Possible Rebuttal 2: Two bits, four bits, six bits a peso. All for Zorro, stand up and say so!

| Is he still a friend? From your post I infer maybe not.
Did he mean it as an insult or a compliment? Orr maybe it was a come on?
I cannot think of a friend who would say that, or acquaintance. However, presuming that I had one, I might respond by asking why he thought that and maybe he was mistaking it for one of the other olympic sports (hoping he didn't reply - yes curling )

After you totally own him in a bout call him a "faggot".

How would you have reacted to my friendīs comment? | tell them that fencing is one of the nine original modern olympic sports.
can't say that for boxing, or football/soccer, or pentathlon, or whatever else. |

How would you have reacted to my friendīs comment? | I heard a similar comment at a Penn State football game when the fencing team was on the field at half-time getting their NCAA trophy. One guy said to his buddy: "Fencing, what a gay sport."
Fortunately, before my hands could go around his young neck, his buddy said: "No dude, have you seen those guys, some of them are like really strong. I know one of them, they work out pretty hard."
I relaxed a bit and just smiled, knowing that most of the women on the team could have ripped the naive offending one a new a$$hole, with or without a blade...
I find that most people that comment about a particular sport usually are not really engaged in any kind of sport to the extent that they understand the dedication, effort, and sacrifice that goes into getting to a truly competitive level.

| When he asked that question, he might have been interested in more than just an athletic activity. Suggest that he be honest with himself about his sexuality. Be supportive; this is going to be a tough period for him. Offer to help him find a gay-friendly sports group. |

| Just say, "If it was gay, you'd be doing it." Then just smile and walk away.

| The comebacks in this thread are largely dumb to the extent that they just reinforce the other guy's point.
If someone thinks that fencing is easy or stupid or gay, there's really nothing you can do to change their mind. They have a point, in that fencing is based less on strength than many other sports, and it was historically an aristocratic sport played by gentlemen who didn't work for "exercise." This is no longer the case, and if they went to an actual high-level fencing tournament, they might change their mind. But maybe not. |

People who make comments like this usually know nothing about what they're talking about. Some of them don't know a whole lot, period.

But maybe not. | I think the real problem is that we as a culture associate gay with easy or stupid. I mean, wearing a perfectly co-ordinated outfit every day of the week is anything but easy, and that's not to mention pulling off tight jeans!
But seriously, folks. The stereotype of gay men not being strong or athletic is just plain not true. If we know of fewer gay professional athletes, it's because the environment is such that they're afraid to go public with it. Besides, the most ripped, muscular dude I know is gay. Really, sexual preference related to athletic preference? It makes no sense. |
