So last Sunday I drove into town to watch the first ever Intercollegiate Quidditch World Cup at Middlebury College. It was Middlebury vs. Vassar, and the first part of the afternoon was the 12 Middlebury teams playing each other to determine who would represent Midd against Vassar.
So the way it works is that the players run around with brooms between their legs. They try to get the quaffle (volleyball) into the goal hoops (gold painted hula-hoops on poles), while the beaters throw bludgers (playground balls) at them. There are no penalties for violent play, and the winning team gets the trophy (gold painted vodka bottle with wizard statue glued to the top). The seekers run around looking for the snitch (tennis ball stuffed into a sock stuck into the back of sophemore track runner and wrestler Rainey Johnson's shorts). Rainey runs off on campus somewhere at the start of the game, and the seekers try to find him. If they haven't found him in awhile, he runs back onto the field, and the first seeker to grab the snitch ends the game and gets 50 points for his team. Funny stuff.
