| Random question about Sabre Guards Ok...so im pretty new to fencing...and i was wondering if anyone thinks that it's productive to incorperate any of the guards other then teirce, quarte or quinte...by which i naturally mean prime, seconde, sixte, septime or octave...people have told me different things at my salle...i have seen people use seconde and prime...also what is the difference between quarte and sixte...

Parry 7 is an interesting historical oddity, and I doubt it could be used successfully in 99.95% of sabre actions. I think you could not learn 7 and never have it cost you a bout.

| While it has only occurred in practice I've used 7 on several occasions to score touches I would otherwise have lost. Once it was a parry 7 transport to prime riposte. Perhaps I would not have lost the bouts otherwise but who is to say?
(That being said 6 and 7 are damn near useless practically speaking, at least as an athlete ).

W | Is it opposite the sword arm? And 8 is the behind the head on sword arm side?

| I've used 6 as a changeup for 5 to some success. I works if you can catch them doing a head cut to flank disengage. They think they've got your arm or shoulder and meet the blade, then it's a nice chest cut repost. In my (albeit limited) experience, 1, 2, and 6 are a changeup option, a trick in the bag. 3-5 are still your bread and butter.

| I love parry six in saber, especially to protect your mask after your cut to the inside line was parried. You don't have to bother pronating your hand, just keep it in supination and you're ready to go.
I think parry seven is ("behind the back"/"over the shoulder") on the weapon side only, no? |
