    Foil Tip German

At the JO's on Sat. the funniest thing happen. The foil event had just started and next thing I knew there was 6 or 7 foils in a row that the tip blew out of barrel leaving the collar and screws in place. What I do to prevent this problem is to tap the end of the tip to set the shaft into the collar better. I can't fine the right words to explain it better. I have't seen this many in a row in A while.

    Tim-
My team (UMass) had this happen on about 4 foils this past Sunday. We assumed we'd just gotten some poor quality tips. How often do you suggest doing the tapping thing? How hard do you tap? What do you use to tap with?

    Thx.

I've most commonly encountered this with Priuer tips (the copper end-caps on them are more prone to deforming than the steel caps on german tips). I use a pair of nail sets-- a 3/32" which is large enough to fit around the end of the shaft, and a 2/32" which is just a bit smaller than the shaft. The 3/32" will help seat the cap down, and then the 2/32" gets used to mash-out the shaft so it goes a bit over the rim of the cap and holds it on. You can also just use a ball-peen hammer. Another approach (at least with the copper-shafted Prieur tips) is to put a dab of fine-gauge solder on.

Out of curiosity, oiuyt, where did you get the german tips you had from (i.e., were they Uhlmann/Allstar, or Hungarian)?

    Dave-
Actually ours were french tips (the german part in the subject was from Tim's comment) from Blade.

They were Uhlmann tips that why I commented on it. I never had 6 or 7 in a row like that.
