Ah the wonders of the search function! I have a great quote, not a sword movie, but applicable to fencing, life, and just about any sport where physical exertion is required:

Rocky Balboa: Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that! I'm always gonna love you no matter what. No matter what happens. You're my son and you're my blood. You're the best thing in my life. But until you start believing in yourself, ya ain't gonna have a life.

    A few others:

"You don't drown by falling in water, you drown by staying there"

"Eloquence belongs to the conqueror" - Remember that next time you whoop up on a newbie like myself =P.
    Details!? JUST STAB HIM!

My absolute favorite (when fencing on the right of the director): "Attack from the right arrives."

Second most favorite: "Attack from the left is no, parry riposte from the right arrives."

"You might be a better fencer, and you might have more experience...but I have a SHARPER POINTY THING!"---actual quote from my club

    From the Mask of Zorro:
Don Alejandro (Anthony Hopkins) motions to Diego's sword and says:
Don Alejandro: "Do you know how to use that thing?"
Diego: "Sure I do...pointy end goes in the other man."
"Time line? Time isn't made of lines. It's made of circles. That is why clocks are round!"---Michael J. Caboose

"The primary thing when you take a sword in your hands is your intention to cut the enemy, whatever the means. Whenever you parry, hit, spring, strike or touch the enemy's cutting sword, you must cut the enemy in the same movement. It is essential to attain this. If you think only of hitting, springing, striking or touching the enemy, you will not be able actually to cut him."

From a fellow about to be hanged for killing a man in a duel, to the priest who has just asked him if he wishes to pray for forgiveness for his crime:

"What?! You call the cleverest thrust in all Gascony a crime?!"

Fencing is a school of humility and develops speed, perfect control of the body, balance, beauty, and strong grace. It should be recommended to all those wanting to master their feelings and actions during their lifetime. Through this art they will always think clearly and act with style in their decisions.

    Julius Palffy-Alpar, a world-renowned teacher

"I consider fencing to be a great art which raises men to Knights in their thoughts and behavior. Fencing is a school of humility and develops speed, perfect control of the body, balance, beauty, and strong grace It should be recommended to all men wanting to master their feelings and actions during their lifetime Through this art they will think clearly and act always with style in their decisions." (Sword and Masque)

It may not have been Marceau, though I have seen this guy listed as a fencing instructor ot Marceau. Anyone have the book?

Since I am the kind of guy who likes to check my references, I found the book. Sorry for coming back to this quote a third time, but I think it is a good one and want to make sure you all have the right quote.

    Here it is:

"I consider fencing to be a great art which raises men to Knights in their thoughts and behavior. Fencing is a school of humility and develops speed, perfect control of the body, balance, beauty, and strong grace. It should be recommended to all men wanting to master their feelings and actions during their lifetime. Through this art they will think clearly and act always with style in their decisions."

Sorry, stupid citation. Quote is from Livy, though Arendt references. Again, that's Livy....

Here's a sign I once hung above the club's target boards.

    It was surprisingly effective.

    Hand first, please.
    Thank you.

    Of course, YMMV.

I've used it before, but it's still awesome sauce

There is no teacher but the enemy. No one but the enemy will tell you what the enemy will do. No one but the enemy will ever teach you how to destroy and conquer. Only the enemy shows you where you are weak. Only the enemy tells you where he is strong. And the rules of the game are what you can do to him and what you can stop him from doing to you.
