Guys, really, it's in poor taste to ask for or advertise torrents on a site selling the DVD. Furthermore, the fencing community is a small one. I've stolen things, but not from my neighbors.

If this forum still had negative rep, this thread would be overflowing with it.

It okay to steal from the people across town, but not from the guy next door?

That had nothing to do with morality. In which case do you think you are more likely to be caught?

What were you trying to say with that comment?
It came across as it's OK from me(you) to steal from others as long as it is not from my next door neighbor.

Depends on how paranoid your neighbor is and how well your neighbor know you(habitual habits, friends, etc.).

What I was trying to say was that I wouldn't ask for copies of ripped fencing DVDs on a free fencing forum selling that same fencing DVD and often frequented by the same fencers who publish that fencing DVD who I may run into at a fencing tournament some time. I also wouldn't give people the torrent for a fencing DVD on the free fencing website that sells it.

I would not take the newspaper of my neighbor, because it may lead to confrontation. Confrontation is much less likely if you are distanced from that person geographically or metaphorically. Either way, I wouldn't go post on the neighborhood billboard that I am looking to steal/have stolen/am willing to help steal my neighbor's paper.

But you bought the DVD, so no worries.

It happens more often than you think. People on offical video game website asking for ripped material(keys, no-CD cracks, certain cracked files); and they receive it from other members. The mods and/or admins usually post about there not being any "official releases" of said files or folders.

But I understand what your saying.

Thank the Lard for the Interwebz.

I don't understand how you could torrent a DVD when you know that there's such a small community supporting fencing video companies.

It sounds like a great way to discourage people from making fencing videos in the first place.

Note that I don't want to take a particular position here, and I think that the work being done by fencing.net and fencing channel is a great one, but DVD's are becoming an outdated medium. Being able to download their releases immediately (after having paid for them, of course), would probably increase their sales and reduce the costs of making such DVDs...

Some people can sleep after cutting their best friend's 6 year-old daugther's throat, watch her bleed to death their Persian rug, roll the body in the rug, dump it in a ditch, and buy a new rug the next day.
Some people can't sleep at night because they got into an argument with a random drunk in a bar.

That's what they said about open source.
Fencing videos will continue to be pumped out.

And if you're in the former category, I can assure you that I will be just as shocked an insulted as I am now.

Possibly more so.

Well, I don't work for fencing pictures, so I can't say exactly how many people need to pirate DVDs to make their business no longer profitable. But FP is not Microsoft.

Also, open source isn't piracy. If you had traveled to the World Championships, taped them, made a DVD, and torrented them, I can assure you that I would have no problem with you putting up a torrent of them. Indeed, I would almost certainly download it myself. But that's not what you did.

I was under the assumption that you were saying that it would discourage people from creating a product if the product released was free.

I'm saying that it might in this situation. Again, this is a business which targets a sport that has ~20,000 competitive members. Microsoft applications are used all over the world by all different types of people. It's like comparing apples and one of the largest corporations on the planet.

I can download HD TV files on Bittorrent right now... I think I was talking about the dematerialization of these materials.

But yeah, having fencing bouts in HD would be awesome. And with super slo-mo replays (Mythbusters style high-speed camera, anyone?)

That type of camera setup would be really cool. I believe that FP is shooting more stuff in HD and Fencing.Net will be carrying an intro to foil DVD that is HD which will be released in January 2008.

That said, you can also go to WCSN.com and subscribe to get access to their fencing archive, which is broadcast quality of the 2005, 2006, and 2007 World Championships plus the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Their coverage is just the semis and finals, not the prelim rounds however.

Downloads like Amazon Unbox is an interesting concept and one which needs to happen at some point in the near future.

Craig

Well, preferably not too much like amazon unbox would be nice...DRM and proprietary players are evil.

I have lots of HD fencing (720p 30fps) including several bouts of the top 24 of Div I ME NAC-C. I am willing to post them but file upload takes quite a bit of time as 1 hr of tape is about 10GB. It would be unedited. I have been taping HD fencing since Sept. '03 (Longhorn Open ME), but mostly cadet ME events.
