Epee point won't fit a shim

I got a couple of epees a while back, but didn't use them much for a while. One of them has a problem with the 1.5mm shim test. It's not that the spring is too tight, but the shaft of the button is too wide. A "standard" shim (I've tried a couple) won't quite fit around the shaft.

While I'm probably just going to put a new point on it, anybody heard of this before? Should I demand extra-wide shims when the director can't do the test on the strip?

The notch in the shim doesn't have to go completely around the point. It just has to go in far enough to demonstrate that there's a minimun 1.5 mm spacing. As long as you can get some part of the shim-- even a flat edge-- to fit in all the way to the shaft, it's fine (though you may want to test at more points around the point to ensure the spacing is even).

That is very common with Italian Tips. I have found that the Prieur guages usually work for that. But as was said earlier, if the side goes in, that is good enough.
