Maraging Blades...

Hey everyone! Quick question...

What exactly is the difference between a standard electric blade and one that is "maraging" (besides the enormous price difference...)

Also, what's with the different colors of blades? Does it really matter: white, blue, gold?

Are there pros and cons to these that I should know about when looking for good quality regional tourney blades?

Thanks!

I'm still new, but I've done a lot of reading and talking with my coach.

Maraging is a specific type of steel that is supposed to offer better durability and quality than "normal" steel.

Everything I hear is that it's worth the price.

The blades tend to last 5 times longer. Thus, at twice the price but 5x durability, they are a steal!

Search the forum. There are countless threads talking about the pros and cons of maraging or non-maraging FIE blades.

I'm currently trying out an STM non-maraging FIE blade (epee). It was quite reasonably priced from the F.net store here. I just started competing and wanted something a little more durable, but it's still not as $$$ as the maraging blades.

This particular blade is not coloured, and I have not had any rusting problems. However, I purchased a regular STM sabre blade and it has rust problems and my friend purchased one of the gold coloured STM sabre blades at the same time and has had no rust problems. Some non-coloured blades don't rust, but I think in a humid environment the colouring can definitely help, at least on the STM blades.

The color coating is a rust protector ONLY during the interval between manufacture and initial sale to a vendor (while it's sitting in a controlled warehouse environment). Once it gets into a fencer's bag with their wet gear, it no longer works....but by then it's done it's designed job.

Plus it's a sales thing....people like nice looking stuff, and the colored blades DO look nicer than a non-colored one.
