    Reversing Shoulders- Rules/Definitions?

    Greetings,

I've heard of a proposed FIE rule change that would allow a riposte in close quarters to be made by way of stepping back with the front foot and reversing the position of the shoulders (weapon arm in back) to allow enough space for a touch to be made.

I searched the forums and have seen some mention of this, but I've found no concrete information one way or the other in the forums or in the FIE rules (current, and proposed)

I'd always thought that reversal of the shoulders vis a vis your opponent was an illegal and "irregular fencing action" but now I can't even find it under the FIE's articles for irregular fencing.

I'd really love to know what the official line on this is- and if this 'reversed inquarta' is legal what the intent and ramifications are for foil fencing and judging.

    Cheers,
    -Holbrook

p.s. I've now found evidence that the rule _was_ changed to allow this type of riposte. Is this still a current rule? Does anyone know the details on exactly which situations allow this movement? (i.e. you can't switch to this position against a lefty from advance lunge distance could you?) And what is the obligation of the fencer regarding his non-weapon arm and it's position?

lol, trying to get my head around this one... appreciate any help.

It was illegal to reverse the shoulders, however the rule was changed a couple years ago. You are now allowed to reverse your shoulders. It's primarily useful in infighting, though you should be careful about where your back hand is located. It still can't be covering target.

edit: There are no restrictions on when you can do it.
What's the "real" world again? I don't think I can see it from my window

Also note that it was only illegal in foil. Epee and sabre could do this even prior to the rule change several years ago (although it would be fairly stupid to try in sabre ).

I've done it. Doesn't actually change the accuracy if your statement.
Actually, the most frequent use was by one of our sabre fencers who used to cross-step retreat a lot and would stop when your attack fell short without regard to which of his feet was in front, and then either correct his feet or attack you reversed. It was rather comical.

He was doing the cross-steps very wrong.
