| Mergs Opus Magnum I wish to announce the completion of my opus magnum,
The Care and Feeding of All Things Fencing (c) 2005
Many of you on this forum have been privy to this work in helping to evaluate and provide comments. I have also posted various sections of this work and have provided much appreciated comments. I am sending selected folks copies of completed .pdf versions of this work. I am also evaluating whether or not to publish this work for sale, or to just post it on line for free. Folks comments and suggestions are welcome.
Regards,
Mergs

| If it is indeed all things fencing I'd pay money for it, no question.

| How large a document are we looking at? (20 pages, 100 pages, 500 pages?)
What price would you be thinking about?
One thing you might do is deal with one of the print-on-demand shops. I'm generally opposed to what I consider the deceptive marketing practices of self-publishing companies, but if it's what you plan for, I think it makes sense. |

| 175 pages total, from what I saw....
As for getting it out..I already recomended he sell...it's hige!
best way...take payment, then email it as a pdf...let the end user print the pages desired instead of killing half a forest! |

| There's a reason I suggested print-on-demand.
I have a laser printer, so printing is practically free, but I'd be willing to pay something for a nice binding job. I could just take it to Kinkos...
175 pages would be worth some money, to be sure. |

| PDF definitely That way its 100% profit. Very little printing and shipping hassle which is so worth charging a small sum less for. Also you will make more if you price point it correctly.
To the fencing community: Despite how you may imagine I might feel about copyright I actually feel very strongly that intellectual property should not be used without fair remuneration to the author. Especially since this is a fencer. He deserves not to get ripped off. Please do not freely distribute the pdf. It should only be available on ebay or something or thru Craig.
Also Mergs, there is a way to charge extra for the capability of printing the doc. You should attempt to secure the file. Granted that security will be, at best, minimal but it will deter most people from attempting to copy it.
If Sam recommends it (HOM Fencing/Purple Fencer) then it should be purchased post haste.

| Mergs, I would gladly pay for a PDF copy. I have been looking forward to this a long time, ever since Frank told me about it.

| All,
Thanks so much for the words of encouragement. As soon as I figure out how to set up the on-line method of selling the .pdf, or as Sam says, get money, then send, and what the advantages/disadvantages of that are, I'll certainly let folks know (am open to suggestions/instructions in this regard; please PM me with details). Due to a potential copyright issue, I have had to remove one of the appendicies. Although it doesn't substantially alter the content, it does reduce the size a bit (by about 10 pages).
BTW, Sam, what's 'hige' mean?

| Sell it on ebay I would have a few made up at Kinkos, with card stock covers and a good binding. Then list it on ebay. If you have enough transactions to your name, you can use the fixed price "Buy-it-Now." Or, set a "reserve" price at your desired selling amount, and "Close" the auction when you get a bid. Re-list and do it again. Zero cost to set-up the selling and distribution system. Then let everyone know it is available on ebay. If it sells well, then look to another publishing/distribution method.

| I'd be willing to pay extra just to have it in electronic format, so I don't have to lug a book around with me when I travel, and above all, so I can search the doc for all info on whatever topic I'm trying to learn about, find quotes that I vaguely remember, etc. |

Just trying to assuage Peach. | How about Magnum (adjective) Opus (noun)? |
