Varies on the size of the pack, I'd imagine. I ordered some 6" x 5" dessicant bags from McMaster Carr and some smaller ones with indicating gel to show when they were saturated.

The indicating gel showed it was "used up" after maybe a month? But I kept the packs in there for much longer since I figured the bigger packs (without indicators) might last longer than the smaller packs. That and because I was too lazy to take them out.

I'm getting a nasty rustlike substance on one of my blades, too, but it doesn't seem like the actual blade's corroding. I hope it's not doing any damage... anyway, in a couple months we'll have a real fencing facility with weaponracksomgexciting.

Scaramouche2007 is on a distinguished road
Rusty blades

Er... fence more and knock the rust off on your opponent - or use a light oil like wd40 or claim its a vintage weapon from the 1890's and worth a fortune but you'll swap it for a maraging blade!

I tried Fencerbill's technique today (it turns out both my blades were rusting!) and it worked like a charm. I found some steel-wool scrubbers under the sink, which did the job. Once I'd put on the wax, I found there was some excess, but it all came off if I used the sponge again, so I polished with a soft-bristle old toothbrush. Thanks for the tip; now my glove won't turn brown every time I handle the blades!
