Has anyone tried to or know of a way to remove stenciling from a lame? <img src="graemlins/jawa.gif" border="0" alt="[Jawa]" />

From a lame? Doubt it can be done...the paint's probably deep in the weave. Perhaps you can paint over it with silver conductive paint.

The dye's pretty much permanent. Easiest thing to do would be to sew a patch of lame fabric with the new name on over the original name.

    Umm....
Have you considered cellulose thinners? They should strip the paint right out.
Not sure of how the metal might react. Try it on a little area like a hem. Use a multimeter to test the conductivity.

Generally pretty gentle on most materials, as long as it's not coated. The fumes are a little toxic. You'll have to do this outside somewhere. Change your clothes, and don't smoke for at least an hour afterwards... You'll go up like a firework! Failing that, I have no idea. Sorry.
    I'll shut up now.
