    German tip problems

    Guys;

    Problem: German foil tip (Uhlmann tip...not a knock-off) The flange that meets the spring is scewed on. I've had several people with brand new weapons or points lose them as they unscrew themselves.

    Any tips on how to secure them? I don't want to try and superglu them because I'm certain the glue would break the pathway for the signal. I'm not all that good with a soldering iron, but that seems the best way...unless you guys have other ideas.

    This used to be a problem with the Prieur. The best solution is two part. Use a center punch. The best is one of the spring-loaded kind, safer. Use a vise, until you get use to it and punch in the center and that will spread the steel shaft to hold the flange.

    Second step is solder. Do not solder without doing the first step. As with glue, "Less is better". Do not have solder go outside the side of the base or it will change the tension of the spring, just have a VERY small dot connecting the steel shaft with the flange.

    Al Carter had an idea that I'm not certain would work. Get a small pool of melted solder, dip the end in and screw onthe flange before eit cools. Only prob is, by the time you even got the flange in position, the solder;s already cooled.

    Next time you're near SwordPlay (except on Monday nights 'cause I ain't there), show me how to do the center punch.

    Thanks, Don!

    You ought to be able to find center punches or nail-setters at any hardware store. I use both a 3/32" and a 2/32" nail-set to fix the peening on Prieur tips. The 3/32" just fits over the end of the flange, to push it down evenly, and the 2/32" is a bit smaller than the diameter of the shaft, so I can "mash" it out over the end of the re-seated flange. I usually don't need to solder Prieur tips when I do it this way, though with the harder, less malleable steel of the Uhlmann tip you may want to do so. I use 25-gauge solder, which makes it easier to not get too much on there.
