Haha! I doubt that considering the women's game is so marginalized in Brazil compared to the men's - there isn't any money to give him. I do have the feeling Ryan lost some perspective. The team's been over there for 5 weeks - sitting in hotel rooms thinking about everything can make you a little irrational...
We had an interesting conversation this morning about the difference in team psychology between women's teams and men's. The consensus from the three other guys (in the interest of full disclosure) I was talking to was a coach should be especially careful of decisions and changes that affect the unity and comradery of a women's team. We weren't being 100% chauvenistic, as team chemistry between men's and women's teams is different. I also think the change in goal could have meant Osborne's header/own goal was a reaction to a lack of confidence in the keeper and trying a little too hard to save it.
It's easy to point the finger and blame Greg Ryan for the lackluster performance of the U.S. team at the Women's World Cup in China, for the utter lack of creativity or tactical acumen, for the bizarre decision to switch goalkeepers on the eve of the semifinal, for the head-scratching choice of subbing in two defenders while trailing Brazil 3-0.
Don't.
Blame the federation that hired him.
Dissatisfaction with a sport's governing body and controversy over how elite athletes should be treated/teams chosen...hmmmmmmmm...
