I myself understand football but I need to teach this (extremely attractive girl) everything she needs to know about football and well I suck at teaching.

Actually all you really need to do is go to some football games with her that you're not playing in and explain whatever she doesn't know throughout the game. That's how Eric taught me everything I know about soccer, I know it's a different sport but the same strategy can be used for teaching football. Hope that helps.

What you might do is fine a psp football game that approximates the real thing, have her play it, and give her the basic rules and tips based on that.

Okay. The two guys at the end who don't run around the field are called "goalies". They're supposed to keep the ball from going into the net. The rest of the guys running around are supposed to kick the ball into the opposing teams goal. When a fight breaks out, duck and/or grab the nearest blunt object for self defense.

I think taking her to a hockey game would be safer, IMO.

In terms of real advice, I'm really at a loss. I just now started watching football without being bored and I'm 22 (and male). Give her time... lots and lots of time.

Wikipedia is excellent for this but what is her level of understanding of the sport in general - are we talking about needing to explain basic concept of offence and defense or why an excellent secondary can win a game?

Football at a glance is pretty basic and the fundamentals are easy to explain. One team has the ball and is trying get 10 yards in 4 tries - if they are successful the process starts again - the end goal is a touchdown, followed by an extra point or even two. The other team is trying to stop them so they can then try to score.

After that, explain things as you watch a game together. Until I actually saw what some of the stuff my boyfriend was trying to explain to me I was lost - nickle package? a secondary? a slant? In the abstract only served to make my head hurt but made sense when I could see it.

Also - Get Your Own Damn Beer, I'm Watching the Game! A Woman's Guide to Watching Proffesional Football by Holly Robinson-Peete - according to several of my non-fan friends was helpful. I have not read the book, I cannot comment.
