If you want to know if it'll protect you from a stab, well...I guess there's only one way of finding out... -

Array Is this out of curiosity, or are you planning something?
What kind of knife? -

Array No, the jacket would not protect you. Kevlar is not a knife-defeating material. -

Array I think that you should test it out and see, make sure you have the jacket on though.

Just a discussion I had with some friends.
Perhaps I was exaggerating when I said it was stab prof.
But still, if it's ment to stop a broken epee....?
Yes I believe it's kevlar.
I thought that kevlar was in wide use ?
Or perhaps aramide or nomex has taken over ?
In many cases they call it somthing else to avoid to
use the kevlar or nomex brand that is a brand under the DuPont corp. -

Array Eroo is very correct. There are many stories of ballistic material which will stop a bullet just letting a knife stab right through.
On the other hand, Kevlar, which is not used for fencing equipment any more due to its inability to stand up to normal wear and tear (sunlight, washing, etc.), is resistant to the CUTTING action of a knife...just not stabbing. Kevlar was used as a material for gloves in factories for workers who worked with blades in a cutting motion. -
My 800N jacket and breeches (sorry, knickers to me means something else entirely) are made mainly of poly(ethene) - aka polyethylene or polythene. (Sorry, I'm a chemistry teacher). -

Array What, you don't have knife-proof underware?? -

I cut apart an old Allstar FIE sabre mask for a strip of mesh to stick into my visor mask, behind the Lexan. Cutting through the Kevlar ( or whatever it was; a yellowish fabric ) layer inside the bib was a *****. I had to pierce it then rip it instead. Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -

Array To add to the other replies...kevlar in bulletproof vests does it's job by catching the bullet rather than deflecting it...it's very tough stuff, and as the bullet deforms on impact the surface area increases, which allows the layers of a vest to slow it down and eventually stop it....somewhere between the 7th and 10th layer, I think.
Kevlar and other like fabrics are good for ballistic threats....but NOT against a sharp object penetration by a knife. (how else could you SEW the stuff?)
It wasn't the ideal stuff to use after Smirnov....but it WAS the only game in town until other materials came along that didn;t have kevlar's weaknesses in OUR application.
(Kevlar also makes a good drum head for marching snares and pipe band snares, although it can sound like you;re drumming on formica if the drum's not tuned right)
As for having a kevlar one...it may be an old jacket....is the kevlar used as a liner in the clothing? All 800N clothing made today is entirely 800N, but an 800N liner inside a regular fabric outer shell. Similar Threads -
