    I'm trying to imagine fencing epee in 1/6 gravity on the moon.

    I know the suits are probably strong enough to handle it... but I can just see the NASA control center freaking out at the thought of their astronauts trying to stab each other in space

    There wouldn't be many epees failing the weight test.

    We're talkin epee, the ugliness known as flunge has no place here.

    Yes, please keep the flunge on the planet earth, no need to scare away the aliens just yet.

    I sent in my application. :-D

    I've had moderate success at the E & Under level with my flunge in epee. It's quite unexpected.

    7.3575 Newtons (weight of 750 gram mass in Earth gravity) is the same weight wherever you are.

    You'd simply need a mass of 4541.7 grams instead of one of 750 grams to test it with.

    Remember that mass and weight are NOT the same thing.

    Physics:
    gravity on Earth = 9.81 m/s/s
    gravity on Luna = 1.62 m/s/s
    weight = (mass) x (gravity)
    mass = (weight) / (gravity)

    Now that that's dealt with, I thing fencing on the moon would be an awesome experience. Make sure you don't push up when you lunge!

    yar, all i know is mass is the same everywhere and weight is mass times acceleration or gravity.

    Talk about a Sabbatical

    I remember looking up at the moon when I was a kid and wondering if 'life existed on the moon' and if there was reallly 'a man in the moon'. We've taken away the romance associated with star gazing.

    When I was in elementary school I stood underneath the Moon Bug that was built by Grumman Aerospace - my father used to work with them so he let me and my sister stand underneath it..... it made it to the moon okay but seriously folks, I wonder a bit about the program as a whole - there's billions and billions of American dollars shot into space. What have we gained from all of this? 1. pluto is not a planet. 2. a lady astronaut went nuts over weightlessness 3. there may be such a thing as 'nothing' which becomes 'something' later on. 4. there are germs in space, but we don't know what they do 5. many of the 'moons' that orbit the other 'planets' may not be moons but satelites, which are really asteroids.

    okay, though, I'm going to send them off a resume. I'm not a teacher. But what does this mean? We send a few school teachers up to a new galaxy to they can teach 31 kids? It used to be a paid Sabbatical to France so teachers could have more information for kids. They don't give Sabbaticals anymore to school teachers because they cost too much.

    I was going to nitpick and say that the rules specifically states 500g and 750g, which would be the same no matter what gravity. However, it also says weight which again, is a poorly written rule, but at least it is not ambiguous (unless we actually start fencing in places with gravity other than that of earth). Then the weights (or masses?) of the weapons might also become an point of discussion (although they are the same as the test weights...).

    Maybe we should have slightly more massive weights in high-elevation venues.
