I recently saw some fencing pants available from one vendor; called epee pants possibly. They seemed like a good idea in that they protected the leg all the way down, as opposed to trusting your socks for lower leg touches. Has anyone any experience with these?
This also sparked my memory and in looking back, many early fencing photos show the fencers wearing pants versus knickers. Anyone know when knickers became the standard? Early 20th century photos seem to show more pants. Just curious
I've seen lots of pictures (photographs and paintings) of fencers of years ago fencing in dresses and bloomers. Where did they go?
I'm guessing they probably disappeared about the time the target area for foil extended below the waist.
I can recall once picking up a pair of long trousers for use in practice (saved wear on my good Allstar uniform) - they were old stock left over from when Castello went under. I also recall the USFA rules still permitting the use of culottes by women as recently as 20 years ago.

IMHO, knickers provide more freedom of movement and less material to catch an epee tip than fencing pants. Years ago, I saw a fencer that used fencing pants. He was constantly reaching down with his non-weapon hand to "hitch up" the material. Guess what happened when his opponent noticed that he was momentarily distracting himself from the game by doing that.
I am willing to take the occasional mark on my shin to get the convenience of knickers.
Just FYI, the LP pants look nice but it doesn't look like they would give the required 10cm of overlap at the waist with the jacket. (Unless you hitched them up with suspenders Urkel-style. )
One test is worth a thousand opinions. I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was. - Toby Keith Living life without taking the occasional risk is like lemon-pepper chicken without the lemon-peper. It's just chicken.

Ok, well... I've decided to answer my own question by buying a pair of the TCA epee pants. I'll let you know what I think after using them. Presumably I'll have found out why no one uses them anymore

Well, those are Polish colors on the knickers. So I'd say yes, it's Sylvia Gruchala
ahhh Brings back the memories... Me, 3rd row, 2k Olympics, Sydney, Womens Foil Team Medal Matches... Poland, Italy, and V. Vezzali. overly bright red hair on the final touch.
Alrighty, I am now the proud owner of a pair of TCA Epee pants! I purchased the cotton style as opposed to the stretch nylon. And the verdict is: I like them!!
I find them very comfortable and noticed no difference fencing in them as opposed to anything else I've worn, although they hold heat quite a bit more than the shorts I usually wear.
