Array Depends on your definition of great, and how far back you want to go.
The obvious ones, from the 80s going forward are Boisse (the father), Riboud, Mazzoni and Srecki. Currently F. Jeannet and ???.
Huh, I guess it really depends on how you define greatness - and it yields a pretty limited set.
Hmm - let's see, great pistol grip guys include Koblokov, A. Schmidt...
Rick
BTW - Manuel Sanabre, who won the worlds for Spain in 1989 used one. "Some people are born great fencers, some people achieve fencing greatness, and some people have it thrust upon them."

Array What about Lei Wang? Didn't he win the 06 WCs with a French epee, or am I just a moron? "If I were ever to challenge you to a duel, your best bet would be battle axes in a very dark basement." Misquoted from The Prisoner

No, I'm pretty sure that he used a pistol and that you're just a moron. Hehehe, j/k, but yeah, I'm pretty sure it was with a pistol.
Also, Paolo Millanoli. "Life is like a wheel, where everyone steals, but when we rise, it's like Strawberry Fields." -

The picture would suggest he's a pistol man, if that's him. I'm not 100% sure. -

Array Leroux also used a French grip.
Right now, among the French team, I think Grumier and Robeiri use French as well, and perhaps Janvier?
There is a Russian who fences with French as well, I think it is Tourchine. He holds it in a very different manner than what I have seen before though. He doesn't post it all the way back, but rather holds it somewhere in the middle of the grip.
Silvio Fernandez fences with a French as well.
Ben Solomon used to fence with French. I much prefered the way he fenced then.
For Carlos, who is from Spain, Sepulveda was fencing with a French.
Boisse (father) now fences with both French and pistol. I don't know if he did way back then.

- Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
- To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Array One definition of "great" would be:
1. Olympic Gold medalist and at least one World Championship
2. Two or more World Championships, and an Olympic medal
3. Three or more World Cup points total year wins
From 1980 on, for Men's only that would yield:
French Grip:
Boisse (the father), Riboud, Mazzoni* and Srecki.
Pistol Grip:
Harmenberg, A. Schmidt, Koblokov
Any others?
* I am pretty sure Mazzoni won at least 3 WCs total year points, he was pretty dominant.
There are obviously other good ones that have been named (great ones, except for the definition above).
