For those of you going to the Tucson NAC in October, I have compiled a list of recommended restaurants/bars/grills around the downtown area near the Hotel Arizona, and around the Tucson Convention Center. Asteriks denote that delivery is available, and the area code for all restaurants is 520.
There really aren't any buffets downtown... There are a handful further east, however, which you can get to if you have a car. Tucson really is a city where you need a car to get anything accomplished.

They'll have a car.
We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.
El Charro was very talked about and popular, but I thought the food there was not anything out of the ordinary. There is a GREAT Italian restaurant within walking distance of the Hotel Arizona-- it's not Ascolese's-- but out of the front of the hotel it is like 3 blocks right and then 2 blocks left. It's in the art museum area. Vodka sauce pasta, so good, I wanted to order a second dinner. Even had entertainment-- an Italian restaurant with a middle-aged Causasian singing Carribean music. I'm eating there again at least once that weekend...
Monkey Box on Stone has since closed, Barrio Brewing on 16th St is open, and Skrappys is really more a teenager club w/ no alcohol and probably not what most of you think of as a bar/club. The italian restaurant you remember might be Cafe Milano?
Whatever happened to the idea of Fencing.net having a city guide to NAC cities? With the NAC a month away now seems like the time to get it posted??? There are some updates on the Freeway exit/entry and underpass closures that I've been waiting to see if are in the guide or whether I should be posting about. (Mostly that the underpass between RiverparkInn and the convention center which was closed to cars but "kind of" open to pedestrians in the spring is now significantly more closed.)
To Lefty_Monster: Thanks for the welcome and I'll be wary of the Water Cooler and a list of buffets and the like:
Golden Corral
4380 E 22nd St
Sweet Tomatoes
4420 N Stone Ave
Hometown Buffet
(520) 888-1060
5101 N Oracle Rd
Chinatown Buffet
(520) 294-8858
5005 S Campbell Ave
Maxim Super Buffet
(520) 731-2138
6940 E Broadway Blvd
Granted, it's not a buffet, but it does serve fairly cheap (under $10 if I recollect correctly) and quality burgers, and it's family-friendly:
Fuddrucker's
6118 East Speedway
Phone: 520-790-4018
And to AZ: Thanks for pointing out the errors, the list is current as of May, and I didn't have the chance to catch up on all the town gossip/happenings while I was home for the summer.

AZ
I called Riverpark Inn when I made the reservation and they said the underpass is open to Pedestrians. Is it completely closed for Pedestrians now? We're screwed if it is.
For people who have free time, an outstanding non-fencing side trip is the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum http://www.desertmuseum.org/ It's one of the best zoos in the world (and much than a zoo), highly recommended for any nature-lover.
"In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice, theory and practice are different."
If you haven't already booked your hotel, then the Hotel AZ is sold out. There are still rooms at the Riverpark in.
We partnered up with World Choice Travel (a part of Travelocity) to test putting these up on the site. Are these rates competitive with what people are getting?

Ohh, Craig, the National Office and THS are going to HATE you. Pity for them.
Good idea! I'd love to see business driven away from THS. I can't get a NAC in Fort Worth because the hotels here refuse to do business with them.
That's it, I'm done with the discussion forums on F.net. It's had its uses, but the ideologues, ranters, and "experts" have drowned too many of the conversations. I'm changing my password to something random and never logging in again.
You're in luck Journalmom, a couple weeks ago they had a chainlink fence blocking the underpass but when I drove by this morning they have opened up a "lane" through the underpass. It's still very much a construction zone on the east side of the underpass so no guarantees about what will happen next week but it looks promising. Getting across the frontage road is almost like walking across a freeway with a median so please be careful!
