Array Fred Thompson for AG? I heard a rumor that the Bush Administation is looking at Fred Thompson (?sp?) formerly of Law and Order fame for AG... Anyone else hear this? "Rub her feet!" - Lazarus Long, Time enough for Love, Robert A. Heinlein "Never moon a werewolf."

Array I've heard his name bandied about--but more in a "wouldn't it be interesting if he were picked" more than any hint that he is actually being looked at. He's certainly qualified (former AUSA, co-chief counsel on Senate Watergate investigation, private practice) and his Senate tenure and lack of administration entanglements would probably mean his nomination would sail through (not something you can say of most candidates).
Of course, he, like most others, falls into the situation of "why the heck would he want it?"
Others names I've heard on the short list are Michael Chertoff (current DHS head) and Chris Cox (SEC head) who might actually want the position, but both have some baggage; and Orrin Hatch, Ted Olsen and Larry Thompson (former Deputy AG under Ashcroft, now Pepsi's General Counsel). These three (with the possible exception of Thompson) would have an easier time of getting confirmed, but like Fred Thompson--why would they want the position?
My best bet is the incoming acting AG--Paul Clement, the Solicitor general--runs out the clock, or actually gets appointed. He'd be pretty smooth sailing through confirmation, I'd expect.

Array Philistine:
I hadn';t realized that Fred Thompson had so much REAL experience. I knew that he had a stint in the senate, but hadn't realized that he actually had real leagle experience outside of TV...
As for Paul Clement, I don't think that the Dem's will want anything to do with people from the current administration, and would probably work to block his full term appointment. Not because he has anything specifically bad that I can point to, just guilt through association.... "Rub her feet!" - Lazarus Long, Time enough for Love, Robert A. Heinlein "Never moon a werewolf."

Array Hummmm.... With his previous term in office, will htis limit him to only one additional term? Or is that only applied to CONSECUTIVE terms?
(on a thread drift... My ex-stepmother is advocating for Billy boy Clinton to run again since this would not be a 2nd Consecutive term, and thus should be allowed.... The once and every other term president?) "Rub her feet!" - Lazarus Long, Time enough for Love, Robert A. Heinlein "Never moon a werewolf."

Don't see anything there about consecutive.... People should really read the constitution before making claims about what it allows.
