    Back from the intervarsity

    Hi Boardies
OK so our intervarsity finnished on Friday and I am back!
It was a great comp, the best intervarsity I have been to yet. (I have been to 4 now).
If anyone cares I got a silver in the individual sabre and came 8th in the epee but BOMBED in the foil (my fave) O well such is life.
In the teams (I anchored brag brag) we came 3rd in mens epee, 1st on mens foil and 1st in mens sabre.
Our ladies came 2nd in both foil and epee.
Our club (University of the Witwatersrand) therefore came FIRST overall (the first time in 27 YEARS!!!)
BUT a really nasty injury occurred and I think all fencers should be aware of this!
The African champion in Ladies epee was fencing the number 2 ranked lady (both are on the national team and therefore have full fie kit: blades jackets etc!)
A blade snagged the arm, piercing the jackets seem. This caused the blade to snap and then land on the chest (above the breast protector). The impact was such that a rib was smashed and pieces of it pierced the lung causing it to collapse!
The fencer is ok now but it was close.
please everyone take as many precautions as posiible! Fencing CAN be dangerous!

First of all let me be the first to congratulate you here on the board. And yes fencing IS dangerous, the sport is derived (only marginally since electric came about) from the art of actually killing people. And the weapons are STILL metal swords. So all caution must be taken when handeling them. I think people forget to realise this sometimes.

    Hi Zelda
Ha Rhodes doesnt even have a fencing team any more so there!!! ;-)
Seriously though it was a slightly dissapointing turn out as Rhodes dont have a team any more, Potchefstroom didnt pitch and Bloemfontein are a bit slow so we only had 6 teams there when we could and should have had at least 8!
