The Emperor of Ocean Park by Stephen Carter is good for at least a five hour plane ride.

I plowed through several of the Da Vinci Code inspired novels this past season. ( I am off that kick now.) I read The Historian early in the season. It was a slow read for me, but very enjoyable. I ended the season with a book I picked up at the airport - can't even remember the title, but it alluded to some masonic mystery. It didn't live up to its hype, but it took place in Miami and south Florida so it was great fun during summer nat's. The best read of the summer was "God's Spy" by Juan Gomez-Jurado.

I loved the historian... made me want to drop everything and bum around Europe (keeping doors & windows locked at night of course).

Those moved by The Kite Runner might also want to try Beasts of No Nation by Uzodinma Iweala. This is a powerful first novel from a young, gifted writer and deals with similar issues of tragedy and redemption.

If interested in detective procedural work, then grab any of the John Rebus series written by the Scot: Ian Rankin. And one does not need to know Gaelic!

If you like Rankin - Try Elizabeth George's Thomas Lynley series. (Although after the last one I wanted to slug her.)
