Julie and Aaron do a fantastic job at the TT Open and it's a lot of fun. I hope all the fencers from the Plains Texas Division and Beyond will come out for the event!

The media doesn't seem to like epee in Lubbock either. (No pictures.)

Hopefully, you will schedule it next year not simultaneous with the South Texas Pouj, which has greater attendance. People in Dallas or El Paso had to choose which tournament to attend. It is best for both divisions. The Pouj has been held for over 27 years during the last weekend of January.
Funny.....I live in the Dallas area, but will have no trouble deciding which one to attend..... The fencers in Lubbock were very friendly and, since I dodn't know many of them well, it was fun to try some of my new tricks on them. And I got in some great training bouts afterwards with a couple of them. I renewed my rating in Lubbock...would have had little to no chance of that at the Pouj. The organizers were extremely welcoming, had a great venue, and had the media show up and take a bunch of pictures (sorry to epee).
Maybe South Texas just doesn't want the competition?

I should note that Pouj has been held at the same time of the year for the past 28 years. I do agree that only a few of those fencers will travel to Lubbock. However, that would typically be the higher ranked fencers.
I don't think that the two tournaments are in competition with each other. Obviously, the Pouj has a larger pool of fencers in their area and it is a much tougher tournament. The problem is that there are only 52 weeks in a year and there will always be conflicts with some other tournament. Texas Tech has had it's tournament either the 3rd or 4th weekend of January for the last 6 or 7 years. From what I can determine, the date of the Texas Tech Open has always been determined by the date of the January NAC. Tech picks the 3rd weekend if the NAC is on the 2nd weekend and the Tech Open is on the 4th weekend if the NAC is on the 3rd weekend. That is what happened this year. Maybe next year things will work out better for everyone.
