Array It would be even cooler if it were held somewhere a bit closer to an airport... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -
Best Beer There is a Chico airport which has 5 United Flights a day, only you have to fly through San Francisco to get there...I guess when they started Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in 1976 they didn't care much about where the airports were...
...but the Saturday Night fence-off in the brewery at this tournament is the best party since the Duel in the Desert!
Also, the Sacramento Airport is only a 70 minute drive and there's lots of cheap flights from everywhere.
This is a great event and well worth a little extra effort to get there. -

Array Heh. "Only".
It means that both a flight AND a rental car are necessary. Bah, I say.
Not that I could make it anyway, at least this year. But still--- Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -
Sierra Nevada Open Is this a case of electronic advance registration acting as (forgive me) a double-edged sword? This competition's less than a month away and there aren't more than four preregistrants in any event.
A trip to Chico is not a trivial distance or schedule issue for me in particular, and the nearer the date draws with (apparently) little interest in the competition, the less likely I (in particular) am to bother registering or planning to attend. Is this competition really as unpopular as the registration list at askFRED is leading me to believe? I'd like to fence in it, but I'm not up for a three-and-a-half hour drive to fence in a 12-person field.
Or, is it that four weeks is a little too soon to draw conclusions about event attendance based on preregistrations? -

Array It was a lot of fun last year but no, it wasn't very big.
28 people in Men's epee. It was worth the trip from San Jose, I thought.
Despite my dismal 11th place finish. http://askfred.net/Results/results.p...nament_id=2207 -

"Advance electronic registration" is not what's slowing some people down, it's that this year's advance registration requires advanced payment as well. And since the organizers didn't arrange for any incentive to get your registration and payment in early, people haven't.
Last year (IIRC) you could register online and pay at the event. This year I'd expect a flurry of registration activity over the next couple weeks as the event nears. Also, some will soon realize that they can pay by credit card now and they'll won't even have to pay for the event until after it's over and their CC statement finally arrives.

Yep, you shouldn't use the current registration numbers to draw any conclusions about event attendance. There is a good number of fencers who have said they will be heading to Chico, but have yet to register (epeeists at least).
It's a fun event, typically very well run and the Saturday night festivities are great.

Array Yeah, I will be there, but haven't pre-registered yet.
Chico is a great tournament if only for the party on Saturday night. Mechanical bull anyone?? - Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
- To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

. Yeah, that was the other thing that gave me pause; I was going to try to go to Palm Desert last year until I realized that I would have driven six hours and paid $70 to fence 17 other people. -

Array Fence among 17 other people, you mean. Most fencers don't get to fence more than 8 bouts in a day of fencing: one pool of 7, 2 DE bouts would be what the majority of fencers would face. -

Subtract a DE (and probably a pool bout, knowing my draw luck) and you have my average day anyway. But do try not to spoil my delusions; I feel so much better when that happens in a large tournament. -

Or, is it that four weeks is a little too soon to draw conclusions about event attendance based on preregistrations? Given that the vet event in San Diego cancelled I think the veterans open will probably be filled. Chico will be quite reasonably priced compared to many locations. But as someone else mentioned don't expect to see the names and numbers until a week before hand. I would expect at least an A1 event in all the main categories. -
Okay, you're convinced me. Can I turn this into a carpool thread? Seriously, though. It's quite a ways; consolidation is easier on everyone. -

. And if you don't pay for your club, it will go away. Don't take lessons and your coach can go away too. And if you don't fence at all it will save you a whole bundle. -

However, I can get 2 months floor fees for the amount I'd pay for one Saturdays fencing at this event... hmm, somehow it doesnt seem worth it.
