Mask Repair Work

I picked up fencing a couple weeks ago after a 3 and a half year absence. When I had to stop originally, my equipment remained stored in my bag for about a month before I touched it again. To my horror, I had left the elastic strap on the back of the mask stretched over the back holder AND my foil blade rested against it the entire time. This left A) the elasticity of the strap worthless and B) rust dye and stain on the strap. Before I go off and get another mask, is there any way to replace the elastic on this? I see one end is rivoted to the screen, but I'm pretty sure I can get it off if I try. My problem would be getting it back on. Have any of you out there repaired these before?

Thanks,

you could just cut it out and sew a new piece of elastic in. that'd probably be easier than messing with the rivets...

Pardon me, but I always found the elastic on the back of the mask superfluous....?

Good luck!

Elastic is sold at any fabric store, and you can get a pop-rivet tool and rivets at just about any hardware store. For masks, it's useful to use washers as a backing for the rivets to help them take and hold more securely.
