    fencers of the past

Can anyone give me a hand? im trying to find out the last name of a succesful (by us standards) women fencer (U.S) in the last century. The catch, the first name is Maria. I can't find any fencing history anywhere

Hmm...off the top of my head, there's Maria del Pilar Roldan. Olympic silver in foil, Mexico '68. She's Mexican, though.

Wasn't there a Maria <something> who turned professional after winning a Nationals (or two)? Then the powers that be in the fencing world ignored her and thus the possibility of professional fencing died at that moment in time. I believe she was taught by Ralph Faulkner and there are pix at Westside. Maybe some Westsiders can offer some guidance.

    Actually, check out: http://www.westsidefencing.com/fchamps.html

Has a list of all women's foil U.S. National champs from 1912 through 1999. Note that Pilar Roldan won in 1959. There's also a Maria Cerra in '45.

Thanks for the link. I was mistaken. I was thinking about Joanna de Tuscan.

I wish there were some histories of the fencing champions of past and of the goings on in the different divisions to read about online.
