Oh, and:
European swords are designed for thrusting, and Japanese (samara) swords are designed for slicing.
So, the sabre is a stabbing sword, then?

Array Oh puhhhhlease.
Reality check... the Star Wars films are NOT real. The Jedi do not exist. Not even if you write that down on a census... -

That being said, who do you think the Jedi were replicating in the movies? The Samurai? Possibly even feudal knights (a lot of reference to King Arthur in that movie)? So while, yes, there are no real jedi, it doesn't mean the movie style fighting they use doesn't hold any relevance to swordfighting in general. Array HOWEVER! If the kids stopped swordfighting and pretended to have a "lightning shooting from the fingers" duel... or if the coach was teaching the classic attack-parry-"forcepush"-"cause ceiling to collapse" drills... then maybe a reality check would be necessary. Array I read the article, wondering precicely what "jedi" elements were added. Apparently, he's added "jedi" moves. I wonder if these are elements of actual sword forms that he has renamed, or if he's actually using what few realistic moves exist in the Star Wars movies.
One of the guys at our dojang was really influenced by Star Wars and tried to do 'jedi' moves. He stopped after getting embarrassed for six months. Jedi moves don't work, so it is a bit disturbing that a serious sensei or sabumnim would incorporate them into a real class, especially when he's boasting about how he teaches old school moves that were once banned by the IKF. He'd be better off teaching his students solid basics and proper technique, and good footwork instead of silly movie stuff.
Incidentally, the only moves I know of that were banned from kendo have never been reinstated by the IKF (International Kendo Federation). Horizontal blows to the head, leg hooks, and choke holds are not at all a part of modern kendo, so unless he's part of some unrecognized federation or has started his own, he sounds like he's full of crap. ...(snip snip snip) Duhhhhh everyone knows that Jedi moves only work with REAL lightsabers.
Go try Jedi moves with a real lightsaber and then come back and tell me they don't work. "To fight in another man's armour is something more than to be influenced by his style of fighting."

Array Ok... no joke... I'm sitting next to this guy at Starbucks and he reads the conversation we're having... no lie, here's what he says...
(read in nerd-voice... much funnier if you do)
"Pshhh... lightsabers don't have batteries... tell him to check the power core and if that's ok then he clearly shattered his primary or secondary energy crystal"
Or something to that effect... and let me tell you... it was NOT easy to keep a straight face listening to that. "To fight in another man's armour is something more than to be influenced by his style of fighting."

I'd have done that, but energy crystals aren't found on this backwater planet and my Nubian starship has a busted hyperdrive and Sanford & Son doesn't take Republic credits:P Daniel Sullivan
