| Y10 points for Y12 placings I just thought of what I think is a reasonable proposal for the USFA Youth Development Committee:
Currently, Y12 points count for a one-for-one ratio on the Y10 point standings. For example, a Y10 fencer who places in the Top 16 of this week's Summer Nationals Y10 event will earn 50 points. If he also places in the Top 16 of the Y12 event, he also earns 50 points. I guess this seemed reasonable a few years ago, but consider the reality at this year's Summer Nats:
The Y10MF event is a tourney with 1 C and 10 E's.
The Y12MF event is a tourney with 1A, 1B, almost 20 C's and D's, and more than 20 E's.
Shouldn't a Top 16 placing in Y12 merit for more points than a Top 16 in the Y10? At every Youth category other than Y10, a similar placing in the next oldest category counts for double points in the younger category. Isn't it reasonable that this should also be the case in Y10 category now? If not double points, perhaps a 1.5x multiplier should be factored in?
As a parent, I don't want kids to be too focused too much on points of course, but since we have it, this discrepancy right now seems pretty glaring to me. If we're gonna have points, we ought to make it reflect the reality of the achievement, I think. Maybe this shouldn't be done at SYC's, where the Y12 field is weaker. But the NAC and Summer Nats tourneys are now really pretty strong.
