Nuts (A.K.A the nutty nut game thread)!

Yes that's right. In celebration of my 1000th post I have made a thread about, you guessed it, NUTS. I will reward rep to the first person who can tell me where the macadamia nut is from. And after that I would be very pleased if other nutty questions came along. They don't have to be nut specific, just make it a trivial question like is a peanut really a nut??? (rep to first person to answer that too). And in finishing I would like to say that although my hopes for this thread are meager and stand but upon the edge of a very sharp knife. The first five people to congratulate me on the goal recently achieved of 1000 posts will be rewarded with rep as well (although that goes with out saying and will probably carry on to who ever else says it as well, but the first five will be most thanked! And I might even e-personally thank them)!
    Yours 99.991723 percent truly,
    Ethan C. Robertson (Aussie/OZ)

P.S. for all that care, I got it done at 3:44, one minute before my dead line!!! Whoo!!!

    Congrats on your 1000th post!

I'm not sure where macadamia nuts come from, but I have a nutty fact for you:

Brazil nuts are not actually from Brazil!

    Congrats on 1000 posts

Macadamia is a genus of eight species of flowering plants in the family Proteaceae, with a disjunct distribution native to eastern Australia (seven species) and Indonesia Sulawesi (one species, M. hildebrandii).

Only two of the species, M. integrifolia and M. tetraphylla, are of commercial importance.
The remainder of the genus possess poisonous and/or inedible nuts.

the peanut is NOT a nut but is a woody, indehiscent legume or pod.

Did you know that nutmeg in large enough quantities causes hallucinations then death?

Can anyone else think of another legume that is also commonly referred to as a “nut” when dried?

Since no one has answered this...

Soya is the legume I was thinking of. When they are shelled and dried they are often referred to as "Soya Nuts"

I have a question: Why are testicles referred to as nuts, yet when eaten, referred to as oysters?
(in case I just lost somebody, boiled/roasted steer testicles are referred to as rocky mountain oysters)

I believe that it would be relative appearance. (My Gym teacher once said (in reference to wearing athletic supporters in a mixed gym class) "I don't want some young thing seeing your hary walnuts bouncing around under your shorts!")

Again, when talking about 'rocky mountian Oysers" I believe that this is descriptive since the color and shape are often similar... pinkish grey and slimy!

One interesting note, in Mexico (and I think Spain too) they are referred to as "eggs."

Keeping things on the slightly shocking note: My Wife shocked the heck out of me recenly when she told me of a colloquial (and offensive) name for Brazill nuts in the Mid-West (specifically Iowa): N**ger toes. Apparently her grandfather used this reference all the time. Fortunately this seems to have died out in her generation.

Which nut is best added to Chocolate Chip Cookies?
    1. English Wallnuts
    2. Black Wall Nuts
    3. Pecans
    4. Macadamia
