Jan Romary passed away

Jan Romary passed away Tuesday the 1st of June 2007. There is a small obituary in the June 18th issue of Time. Considering whom Jan Romary is I wonder why the USFA hasn’t posted the information on the web site. Craig does have an article in the U.S. Fencing News.

For those who don’t know who Jan is she was the only (that I know of) who went to 6 Olympics as an athlete. I know Peter Westbrook made 6 Olympic teams, but he only went to 5 because a guy named Carter said he and others like him couldn’t go. She is also the first lady to carry the American Flag in the Opening Ceremonies. She did that at her last Olympics, the 1968 Games in Mexico City. But this was not her last Olympics.

Her and Peter have another connection. She was the Commissioner for Fencing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics where Peter won his Bronze medal. She was also the ONLY Commissioner who actually competed in their sport they were responsible for.

She was a lady in every sense of the word. She will be sorely missed.

Well, not quite. Aladar Gerevich got gold medals in all Olympic games from 1932-1960, 6 in sabre team. He also got a 3 medals in sabre individual, one of each color. To round it out, he also got a bronze in the 1952 foil team event.

According to:http://users.skynet.be/hermandw/olymp/careers.html

At least 11 olympians have competed in more than 6 games. 5 fencers have comepeted in 6 or more games - Ivan Osiier, Aladar Gerevich, Kerstin Palm, Bill Hoskyns, and Janice herself.

That does not in any way diminish her achievements, though.

Rest in peace.

Peter Gustafsson

Peter, thank you for this information. I am very glad that we have international members in this forum. Our news in the U.S. is so one sided. Now I am better informed because of you. Any day I learn something new is a good day.

Thank you again,

Yeah, American news! Ridiculous! How dare they forget to mention the other people who have been to the Olympics more then 6 times!

What I'm trying to say is that your source sucks, and you're about a week late. Jan Romary

Thank you for the information and it is more accurate. Jan was the first Lady to compete in 6 Olympics. The way the Olympics is now with the need to qualify not within your country, but in the World I don't see anyone in the future making 6 Olympics.

As to my source it was someone saying they had seen an article on her passing. It could have been Craigs article which I wouldn't describe as you did. I should have found out about it on the USFA website. It is not as if they haven't made changes since she passed away. The latest change was on the 7th.

For the information you gave I would have given approval points, but your negative attitude I feel was out of place.
