About the wire

Either Epee or Foil

What will you choose?

A. wire sold by vendor

B. solder a new wire with the old plastic cap

If you choose B

How do you solder the new wire into a old plastic cap?

pull out all the metal part?

If it's an easy fix I'd do it myself, but if it's seriously bad I'd buy a new wire from a vendor.

But that's just because I can't solder.

I refurbish Foil wires but not Epee wires.

All the Foil points I have encountered so far have a small hole drilled through them. You do take the metal hat out of the plastic cup. If I can, I use a soldering iron/gun to take out the old stub. If I can't, I drill a very small hole through the center.

I have made up a piece of wood that has stepped holes, about a dozen. The metal hats just fit in. Prepare the hats, measure and strip the wires and tin the ends with solder. If I unsoldered the old wires I just heat the hat and slide the wire in. For drilled hats, slide the wire in and then heat with an iron and add solder.

Then slide the hats into the plastic cups.

Most Epee wires are crimped. I have had zero luck in replacing the wires and don't try any more.

vicepang:

Choose A as the best option.

If you want option B here are the details for a foil wire: Never said it was easy.

1. Remove the brass contact from the cup from an old wire
2. Using a file and vise, flatten down the bottom end flush
3. Using a very-very small drill bit, drill a hole dead center, dont worry if it goes all the way through.
4. Now comes the hard part. You need some double insulated 28 awg copper wire. I use a 28 mm 155c triple insulated wire. You can order the wire from: Myself, Swordmasters (also mine) LP, or Negrini. Do me a favor, there are those that will tell you about a wire that is ready to use from Radio Shack. Dont use it. Its poopy wire. More problems than its worth in my opinion.
5. Cut the wire to the length of a foil wire. I cut mine at 43". Its a little longer than the German normal wire, yet there is more to work with.
6. Tin one end of the wire: Heat your solding iron up, use a 40 watt soldering iron. Put a bubble of solder on the tip, take the wire and quickly submerge it into the bubble of solder and quickly pull it out. You will notice that the end is not tinned. If you tin just a small amount, this is good. If you tin too much, this ok, just cut it back. You really only need about 1/16" tinned.
7. Soldering time. take the brass contact with the new hole in it, place it in the vise with the bottom facing up. Take your soldering iron, put a very small amount of solder on the end of it. Place it on the contact to let it heat up, once its hot enough, place some solder in the new hole. Keep the solding iron on the contact, now, place the wire in the hole. Remove the soldering iron. Make sure the insulation from the wire is butted up against the brass contact.
8. You are going to notice a little extra wire coming out of the top of the contact, cut it off flush with the top of the contact. Give the wire a really hard tug holding on to the contact. Making sure you have a super good solder on the contact. If it pulls out, you get to do it all over again.
9. If you have a good solder joint, now, slip the plastic insulator cup on. Make sure contact seats fully at the bottom. Check right below the bottom of the insulator for any exposed wire or burned off insulation. This will cause a huge problem when you use the wire.

Your done!

Now for epee wires: dont try it. Way too hard. I have been working on it for a year now to figure out a easy process and have not found it yet.

Good luck

About the soldering process!

I would like to ask

should I completely remove the old wire

and only left the plastic cap for soldering?

That means I have to put the new wire through the hole of cap?

Vicepang:

Read my notes above.

remove the brass contact from the cup, remove the old wire, solder the new wire in, put back into the cup.
