According to my coach who was raised in Communist Poland, fencing was THE sport(well, and soccer.) Athletes were respected and part of the workforce, not the subsidized elite we Americans have been programmed to believe.

I'm not sure I'd travel more than an hour for a tournament anymore. I just discovered that "the Ancient One" is too young to remember me, so I'm still in mourning......

well, I came from the Philippines-and it's pretty much like here in the U.S. except for the fact that there are a lot less possibilities to fence and learn fencing.
