Fencing Instruction in China?

So, a friend asked me to help him find a place to fence in China. He's not Chinese, but lives there, and would like to learn to fence. I realize this is a total longshot, but does anyone know of any fencing around him. He lives in a town called Guilin, which is in the Guangxi area. The nearest city to him is Nanning.

If anyone knows any clubs in the area or has a link to the Chinese Federation's website, I would be extremely grateful and very free with rep.

Hi!

Chinese federation website, all in Chinese. I could not find any club listings:

http://fencing.sport.org.cn/

Mrs. Gustafsson comes from southern China, and has been in both the cities that you mention. I will try to gt more specific info, she might well have old classmates living in Nanning. I only found club websites from Beijing and Shanghai, only in Chinese.

Your best best are probably the Singaporean and HK federation websites, since the people there probably are (at least some of them) bilingual.

http://www.hkafa.org.hk/

Singapore does not seem to have a federation website, but there is an English-language club website here: http://www.zfencing.com.sg/web/index1.html

Have a nice time!

Hi!

Just had the Mrs. have a look at the websites. The Chinese federation does not have any club listings. The website of Nanning city had no sports club listings. The English-language version contained some info on places to do sports on your own (running, golf, swimming, etc.) for a fee, but no club listings.

Some text from a 2004 f.net thread:

I am the Chairman of Shenzhen University Fencing Club, As I know,Since the club was established in 2001, hundreds of students had been trained to fence foil, sabre and epee as beginer's level.
Actually, there are usually a small number of students come to the club frequently, about 20 students. Most of us are foil fencers.
There another fencing club in the down town, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily Press Group Fencing Club. It's a commercial one. The club has a number of fencers at about 20-30,most of them are sabre and epee fencers.
In Guangdong, there will be more people doing fencing, such in Guangzhou,Foshan,Qingyuan. Guangzhou has 2 professional fencing academy and about two amateurish fencing clubs. The academies are training the professional fencers for the national team.

Contact info for fencing club in Beijing, without website:
Beijing Fen Xing Fencing Club

Tel: +86 (0)10 6492 9041; 6491 2233 extension 480
Fax: +86 (0)10 6492 9041

Other adress for the same club - no idea which is correct:
Beijing Fen Xing Fencing Club

Add: No 3 Anding Road, Chaoyang district, Beijing 100101

Tel: 86(0)10-6492.9041, 6491.2233 ext. 480

There is fencing in the National Taiwan Ocean University. That is the wrong country, but the coach might possibly have some leads.
The coach is: Yu-Hui Chiu

Fencing Club

as far as I know, China just started to have private fencing club, but most city would have sport school for children and youth, they are like normal school but forcast on sport. so the listing would be under sport school and not club, my two fencer went up to China three or four time a year to those school to have joint traning.

I will try to get info from HKAFA to see if it is possible for non chinese to joint those school or to have private lesson from them.

harry
p.s.
you can try to contract the following person

Mr. Wang Rui Ji
wangrj@hksi.org.hk

He is the he head fencing coach of Hong Kong sport institute and he is from China.

good luck

hey sorry for bumping this year old thread, but i'm heading to beijing soon and would like to know if it's worth lugging my kit across the world to fence at this club:

Beijing Fen Xing Fencing Club
B1F China Sports Museum, east gate of National Olympic Sports Center
Asian Games Village
Beijing, 100101
Tel: +86 (0)10 6492 9041; 6491 2233 extension 480
Fax: +86 (0)10 6492 9041

is it a competitive club or more of a teach-youngsters type setting?

i'm going to call them (though i might need a translator as my chinese sucks), but it'd be nice if someone on f.net could help me out too.

There is another thread out there with information that may help you.
( Sorry, but I am getting ready for work and do not have the time to search for it.)

I spent a lot of time in mainland China and I remember the locations were in the Gung Zho area. I am not familiar with the areas you mentioned, or perhaps the spelling of the area.

The area I am talking about is a big industrial area where a number of ex-pats live.

This thread talks about three or more places to fence in this area and if a foreigner is welcome or not. I believe there was one were they weren't, as some Olympic training took place there.

Perhaps I am mistaken and this is not the correct location you are seeking in China, but if it is , this thread contains information which would be of value to your friend.
