Why Venezuela is ahead of USA?
Because USA got 2 unlucky encounters with Cuba at the end of last season:
1) World Championships (double points)
USA was not able to make top 16 losing to Cuba 31-32
Venezuela took 12th place resulting in +28 points against USA
2) After that in Zonal championship USA lost again to Cuba 26-45 in semifinals...
this result alone gave Venezuela +24 points

Congratulations!!! .
I would think that 2nd place may be
the best result ever for USA Mens Epee Team?

. As to my recollection, it is. If it has happened before, it hasn't been for a very long time. Don't let 'em drop it. Don'tlet'emdropit. Stop it... bebop it.

Array Canadians did very well too, considering that the coaches have put together a very young team for this one - the oldest guy (Tigran Bajgoric) turned 24 a month ago, the youngest (Igor Gantsevich) will be 19 in a month...
Tigran came in down by 5 in the final bout against Kazakhstan against a very good Sergey Khodos and beat him in overtime to make top 12 after beating RSA and losing to Venezuela, which was a much closer match than the score indicates...
well done
although it is somewhat pathetic that Italians had a significantly larger fan base than did the Canadians at a grand prix that took place in Canada :S -

Array Why wasn't Tikomirov included in that team? "If I were ever to challenge you to a duel, your best bet would be battle axes in a very dark basement." Misquoted from The Prisoner

Besides, Tikhomirov has an injury -- I heard he kind of blew his knee in one of the earlier competitions this year (could have been in Paris). If you saw his last bout in this competition, you noticed that he wasn't very mobile -- no lunges, no fleches, nothing of the sort. -

Array Since this is the 2nd event being used to compute the placement for Olympic qualifying, the result was great for the US. The Cubans couldn't get past France and Spain held seed so the US is now first in region in qualifying points.
The Pan American Zonal championship will count for a lot, but the US now has a win against France and the "underdog run" by breaking seed in 3 matches. That has to count for a lot psychologically.
Great result for the US.

in Zonal Championship in August... Could you please elaborate? If the USA ends the qualifying season ranked first in the zonals, doesn't that earn them an Olympic berth? Also, seeing as they just dispatched Russia and France at this WC before narrowly losing to Italy, isn't it a bit generous to describe any zonal WC competition as "very difficult?" -

- Craig From what I understand, the PanAmerican Games in July do not count for FIE rank, but the PanAmerican Championships (August) do. So, Zonal Championships will be our next opportunity followed by World Championships. Don't let 'em drop it. Don'tlet'emdropit. Stop it... bebop it.

You're correct there. Got my tourneys mixed up.

Array God, what a great result for Cody and Team USA. Major kudos.
DFP: I think Pavel's allowed to have an off tournament every now and then. I mean, I don't think he really has anything to prove to anyone. RebelFencer's Awesome Quote of the Week:

Array Yes... considering it's been already proven several times over in the Olympics that your hockey sticks are no match for ours!
Invasion is one way to ensure a Gold in hockey!

No. I said this is a long standing issue--nothing to do with Bush. I saw this first hand when I was there in the 70's. It is also prevelant in Europe and we saved their ass in the 40's. -

This was Epee team match....
What else except looking at this score you need
to realise that it will not be a walk in a park?

Craig Yeah, it's pretty easy when one is called "PanAmerican Games" and the other is called "PanAmerican Championships." Don't let 'em drop it. Don'tlet'emdropit. Stop it... bebop it.
