Rudy Volkman's "Big Book of Fencing" is a great starting-out book, and makes some of the best use of illustrations I've seen in a fencing book. The inclusion of his armoring how-to is a real bonus.

The other Lukovich book in print, "Fencing: the Modern International Style" is better suited for beginners than the one you read. You're right about "Electric Foil Fencing"-- there's some good stuff in there, but it's very dense and not suited for a novice.

Evangelista's book is an engaging introduction when he's not spouting invective about the moral degeneracy of competitive fencing and the modern world in general.

I've just got hold of Rudy's book (thanks Rudy cheques in the post ). It seems quite good although I've not read it all yet.

If you can get hold of it a book I read years ago was Bob Andersons "The Complete Fencer". Its really good although I think its out of print now. It's also a brit book so you may find it hard to get hold of.

I'm presenting dated material, but Aldo Nadi's "On Fencing" is a great book as well. I have yet to find such a wonderful and accurate working description of the mechanics of the lunge.

For pure mechanics and definitions (with TONS of photographs) there's William Gaugler's "The Science of Fencing". Great for seeing what you've heard about, but doesn't present the real fencing theory that one light want.

Charles Selberg's "Foil" is a great one. Thin, modern, and very applicable.
