rule question
I was directing a foil match. A coach was standing on one end of the strip(out of view of his students opponent) foil in hand doing the actions that his student should do. When I told him to sit down, and he did.
At the end of the bout he told me that the USFA had published an addendum to the rules that allowed coaching during the bout. Is that true? If so where could I find that? -
The USFA website has all their rules and addendums in Adobe Acrobat form (or you can order their rule book in paper form). www.usfencing.org Lumberg.

Array Arturo,
I was told that it was at the DIRECTOR'S discretion within the bounds of the addendum. If the coach is annoying you, you can tell him to stop.
I think that's right. I need to reread the info. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Array the winter edition of AMERICAN FENCING (Winter 2001, vol 50, #4)has an article on the subject on p. 26. it states that the part of Rule t.82 which prohibits giving advice to fencers during the match has become obsolete; ergo, coaching is now allowed. details to follow. officials can still stop anyone who "disturbs order". ultimately, individual referees will have to decide where the line between them is. Tomorrow is another day; who knows what the tide will bring in? -

Array Gee Arturo, I wonder who that was????
Actually athte summer nationals a couple of years back they handed out a thing saying coaching was ok so long as it didn't disturb the fencing. The next year I was informed by a member of the FOC that that had been a trial thing and was not a rule. To the best of my knowledge there has been nothing "official" allowing coaching.
I expect that will change fairly soon. If you give a man a fire, he is warm for the night.

Array There were a number of rules changes posted to the USFA website this summer, but were removed when inaccuracies were noted (and loudly complained about!). I've asked George K. about when and if these new rules are going to be re-posted (in their correct version) and he forwarded it on to the Chairs of the FOC. Still no word. This premature posting of rules has continued to cause problems, especially with their interpretations. Wait and see. -
Unconfirmed
Array are there any rules about keeping your opponent fairly quiet during the bout? or at least steer him into a debating team rather than fencing? Such poor losers out there, I don't know! Similar Threads -
