Two of the best epee fencers in California smoke. Both are european. One of them is the national team coach.
| I think Gago quit.

| I, too, went to college in the 1970s and drinking was an approved major at our school. Smoking was a natural partner of the drinking at times.
And certainly some of the fencers on our NCAA team (including both our coaches) were participants in these dual activities (smoking &drinking.)
A few fencers smoke nowadays, too.

| Before it's Over and Done, One Way or The Other Quitting smoking has several dimensions.....may I elaborate? First!!! Motivation. Some people love to smoke. That's a motivation. I don't find it terrible to feel like having a smoke. It's relaxing for some people and they feel better while they smoke and chitchat with their friends. So it has a social aspect, you can't beat a good Dunhill with a cup of coffee and chitchat. Second!!! What can I gain or lose by quitting. By quitting I can run in the countryside and enjoy the weather. I can average 30-50 miles per week running..... but what about getting mugged while runing, falling down and breaking something, running into atilla the hun or a clown with a butterfly net? That's the downside of it. Third!!! Can I win the Grand Prix of all fencingNyet? If I quit alltogether, can I win? will I beat the California Boyz?
The answer!!! NYET~)---------* All the quitting smoking, pullups, pressups, ballet stretches, running and walking with a 50 pound bag of fencing stuff schlogged on my back will not get me to the top five vs California and that's who I would have to beat to get anywhere further. But I tried. I did well for a woman of my age with a.....a....giant fiborous mass growing steadily ....... Fourth!! Will I feel happier smoking a cigerette with a friend and laughing and die with a little bump in my lung, or will I be happier winning a smackdown in Maui and have everyone hate me for beating their dreamgirl.
After weighing it all and quitting for 10+ years, I went back to smoking once in a while and I feel better in making that decision. But! I will quit again, when the US Government makes a substantial change in its current environmental policies, and does right by people who have so little, and give so much in return.

EDIT Jack Nottingham, that's the dead guys name. (Had to think about that one for a while.) | A lot of the top ranked fencers in the world (particularly Europeans) and their coaches smoke. Stand outside any World Cup venue they'll all be there between rounds, coaches and fencers.
See this thread... Smoking and fencing.

| At a tournament this past season, there were a couple NCAA finalists outside smoking before things started started. |

| From what I've observed, fencing while stoned/drunk/hungover does not at all improve your fencing. Please don't do it. It's just annoying. As for tobacco smoking, just keep it away from me and I probably won't say anything about it. |

| There was an old thread on this. Yeah, I know people that fence and smoke (various things...). My ex-boyfriend smoked, but he quit. Two of our coaches smoke, but only a few of us know about it. Smoking is just stupid, so don't start because not starting is A LOT easyer then quitting. It also hurts your performance, gives you bad breath, bad teeth, makes you smell icky (yes, I just said icky), and, does lots of other bad things to your body.
