Tip conspiracy...

I never used to have many problems with French epee tips. I went through 3 in four weeks! I also went through about 10 screws in the same amount of time. The screws - when I find them - are fine; the tip is where the problem is everytime. The screws actually tear out of the tip. I switched to an old tip and haven't had any problems for two and a half weeks now.
So my question is this: did I just get a bad two batches of tips, or are the makers of these (HPC, Prieur) making them out of softer metal so we'll be forced to buy more tips - or go german?

From reading Volkmann's book, there is a new Italian style epee tip that doesn't use any screws at all. If screws are the problem maybe you should go that route.

That's the tip he's talking about.

They also have them for foil, but I haven't gotten the guts to pay a bunch of $$ to have a single tip sent here from Italy.

Re these new screwless tips, www.negrini.com is offering them, they're called SCHERMASPORT tips. They offer screwless tips for both foil and epee. Costlier than regular tips, but I could see buying some in the future. I like the idea of reducing the number of components that could break down.

I started another thread asking about who sells the scherma sport tips... they look pretty sweet. unfortunately only negrini sells them right now. I've emailed some equipment vendors in the US asking them if they think they could carry the screwless tips; so far I haven't gotten an answer from them.
if that falls through, anyone want to consolidate orders and save on international shipping?

From what I was reading on ESTOC and the other sight for schermasport, they say that they strictly meet all FIE requirements with these screwless tips.
So that brings up a question, if there is this must have screws rule, are we requiring them domestically when they aren't for international events? Or are they fibbing about passing the FIE specs?

I believe that rule states that if there is a place for screws then they must be present. You cannot use an epee with a single screw if it had spots for two. If it was designed with 4 screw spots then it must have 4 screws. 3 screws would fail the weapon.

I looked up the rule, USFA 99 edition, it says that the tip must be affixed by two screws, or 'any other method approved by the SEMI committe of the FIE'. That being the case, I think the real question is: Did the SEMI committe approve the new Estoc screwless tips or not?

Re the SEMI committe, while I'm not sure wether theres a spot on the net to confirm this, I got an email from Physical Chess stating that the SEMI committe did approve the screwless tips they'll be selling, so it appears that the tips are totally legal and you shouldn't be carded over them. From what they were saying they'd put more info about them on their web site when they go on sale come september. I think this is a great idea, one less little part that will break or require fussing with.
