HOM Saber Glove Review I'm starting to fence kids in my club more and more in saber and time and again I cannot find a manchette large enough for my massive forearms: me Silverback, you Dian Fossey!!!
So I happened upon the Saber version of the Armor series by Sam @ H.o.M. Fencing.
Not that I'm prejudiced or anything but I own 2 protos of his 800 newton series, an Orange one, and now...
DA NA NA!!!!
The Saber Glove...
It looks exactly like a normal glove BUT:
It has a ruggedly sewn lame fabric instead of the normal sleeve. It is doubled over lame fabric too for durabuility's sake.
It has, per Sam's usual, a large amount of velcro so that when my forearms flex the glove won't come undone. Also happens when the velcro on other gloves get weak. But I've had Sam's protos for a while now and despite repeated abuse by a large guy who doesn't take care of his equipment they hold up fabulously.
In addition the end of the sleeve has some sewn in stretchy stuff which allows the forearm to flex naturally without stressing the velcro.
Again its lame fab inside and out from the wrist to the end of the glove.
The sewing is a rugged as usual.
If I had an issue with the glove its a small one. If there were any way to make the fabric inox or even ultralight I'd go that route and pay extra for it.
That's high kudos from me since I never pay extra for anything.
Sam's gloves are by far, IMHO one of if not THE best out there. Why? He spends a great deal of time and money making them so. Support American engineering.
The best part about his gloves is that they wear well and don't fray like Uhlmann gloves nor do they wear at the fingertips as easily.
Finally where the body cord comes out is done very nicely and is reinforced with stitching.
It's the little things that count and Sam's a stickler for detail.
As far as pricing I confess I don't know what I paid for the glove. My mind is temporarily taking a vacation it seems. Call Sam for details at 818 567 2280

The Armor Two-S IS, in fact, the same glove as the Armor Two...with the ADDITION of lame over the cuff...that way you don't lose the impact protection of the foam in the cuff.
In addition the end of the sleeve has some sewn in stretchy stuff which allows the forearm to flex naturally without stressing the velcro.
*snicker* It's called "elastic" dude...*sigh* some fencers. It's actually required (that, or a popper button or some other means of ensuring contact with the sleeve of the lame...simply pulling the cuff tight won't do it)
Again its lame fab inside and out from the wrist to the end of the glove.
and that IS new...the rules state a minimum of 5cm turnover on all cuffs....and 5cm is about all you normally get...as you can see from the pics, the only part of the cuff interior not covered in lame is the hook part of the velcro...and the logo and size labels will be more than 5cm up from the back of teh cuff.
.

If you can find me the factory that makes the inox or LP stuff so I can buy it at wholesale I'll HAPPILY use it...that stuff is expensive retail ( which is why i don;t have a final price for it yet...I'm waiting for a reply from one of teh other vendors on that.
Sam's gloves are by far, IMHO one of if not THE best out there.
Awww....thanks! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...morTwoStop.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...TwoSbottom.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...orTwoScuff.jpg
And by the way...in case anyone is wondering...FF asked before posting my phone number...it's OK...and it's the evening office number anyway.
be advised I don;t have any in stock at the moment, but I should around Summer Nats. The pictured glove was one of the last three prototypes.

How much are you going to be charging for the gloves? And, what's the color selection going to be like? -

It's LOOKING like the price will be $35, but it depends on my cost for the lame material, which I have to provide to my glove maker....which means I have to buy it from somewhere else. I'm waiting for confirmation on the lame pricing...that stuff isn't cheap even at the wholesale end.
Colors...so long as I can order at least 50 units at a time I can get any color I want. It'll probably be blue or red to start out...more colors as I get more cash to build up inventory. -
Guys,
From the quotes above, the review of this glove is right on the number!
The only problem with this glove is: its under priced. For $35 bucks, you get one of the best gloves on the market that is made to last! What a deal. Sam, in my eyes, this is clearly a $50 glove. If your not selling 30 of these units a week, folks just do not know about it or just don't care.
Guys, again, this is the best darn glove on the market today (period)!
Go to this web site: http://www.homfencing.com/ and order one when you have those holes wearing in the fingers or your favorite armorer tells you when your glove will not pass for sabre.
Sam, you did good on this one.

Array Thanks for the props, Gary!
BUT everyone wait until I have them in stock!! The picture is of the latest prototype...I'm waiting for confirmation on my lame pricing before locking the price down...it could change.
Plus there's a change to the cuff that needs to be made at the back end...nothing major, tho. -
Hmmm...I'm rather intrigued. I know that the last time I was milling about the FNet booth and tried an Armor series glove I thought that the seams of the fingers were a touch weird and that it didn't really allow for the feel of the weapon that I generally expect; I basically figured that it could serve a decent practice/workhorse glove but wasn't really a great competition glove. Several other fencers I know thought similarly (and I think I even mentioned it on another thread). I like the concept, I like supporting US goods and fellow FNetters...any word on how the current gloves feel? (I definitely need a new saber glove) I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.

(I definitely need a new saber glove) The seam issue may be something that's on an individual basis...but if you can post a link to the thread you're referencing I'll certainly look into it. Other fencers have had issues on an individual basis...Holly Ordway was one...if I remember correctly, she has long fingers and it was causing her some problems...the downside, of course, being that if she gets a glove with long enough fingers, it'll probably be too big elsewhere, 'cause she's a fairly small and slim person.
As for how the new glove feels...FatFencer is probably the best person to ask, since he has one...Craig next. Most of the other people who have gotten glo ves fro the latest manuafcturing run are not f.netters, so it'd be hard to get opinions there. -

Array Now there's an idea! It'd at least be something productive to do with the clumps of hair being constantly picked up around the house during shedding season!
I hereby promise not to tweak Inq anymore about goofy colors or patterns on fencing clothing and to keep my tie-dyed socks to myself.
