There really is no possible comment for this...

    I'm really kinda speechless.

    Ahhhh yes the Daily Mail.

Why do people on this board like quoting it. It is ... ahem... not very good.

However it is a bit of a diplomatic blunder - but hardly worth starting a war over.

One wonders if this has created as much excitement in etiquette circles as the infamous Keating incident.

The what? I knew there was a big S&L bailout, but didn't know there were faux pas involved as well.

Has no one noticed that we stopped being subjects of the British Crown some time ago, and under less than polite circumstances?

So why are so many people, Americans included, so anxious to see our leaders conform to the niceties of royal punctilio, as though we were still a colony?

Additionally, visitors to one's home are usually expected to hew to the rules of the house, not vice versa. No?

It's not as if he massaged her shoulders or anything.

I can see Inq is still a bit sore about that whole business with Britain a while back. Quick, everyone hide your tea!

It's called diplomacy. Doesn't matter whether you agree with the ideals of monarchy.

I'm fairly confident the Queen can see the humour in the situation.
I mean, she visited our city a couple years back, and her water taxi (boat/taxi service) broke down (unforseeable mechanical problems) in the middle of the river. The papers had a field day, the Queen seemed more understanding.
And Canada still is, technical, sovereign.

Actually, Canada is made up of 11 equal crowns, all worn by the same lady. I often whether she has conversations like:

"Dear Queen of Alberta, this is the Queen of Canada. We'd like our oil back."

"Dear Queen of Canada, this is the Queen of Alberta, piss off you tea bag faced runt."

The nice thing about our Queen is that She can reduce the leader of the free world to a quivering mass of jelly. No one is really sure how She does it, but it's one of the reasons we love Her.

And, Inq, it's usually the host who conforms to the needs of their guest. At least where I come from.

    James.

Hahaha, so Bush winked at the old bird and Mickey Rooney kissed her hand. Who cares? She should be flattered that there are still some folks willing to treat her like a real person. What the heck is her function in this World anyway? She has no power or relevence. Maybe Bush's wink just was a reminder that she's just another old, rich, broad. He should have given her a friendly slap on the @$$.

    You know something?
I've heard almost the same thoughts put forward be Britons.
That, and some bitterness about the tax money the Royal family recieves.

You want a real breach of taste? Leno had this bit on the Tonight show where he showed a bit of film of Bush talking while the Queen stood next to him. At one point she goes into her purse for something. Cut to a closeup of a hand rummaging through a purse, where we see cigarrettes, a bottle of Jack Daniels and condoms.

    A wink pales in comparison.

It would have easy to call the whole thing off - beforehand. Donīt invite people unless you plan to treat them they wish to be treated!

Which goes for several Monarchs. Long live the King!
