I've been trying to post a message with an attachment. That's the one that fails to "specify a username." It doesn't make sense. Are attachments a problem? Is length of message an issue?
I tried posting a reply a couple of days ago and got the "failed to specify a user name" message. I tried again and it seemed to work, but then the post never showed up. I tried again and got a message that the post was identical to one I had submitted within the last five minutes.
It never did show up, but replies to other threads did just fine.
I hit all those same problems. Another one seems to be that
if you attach and download a file for a post that never lands anywhere, your
file manager keeps track and hold that space against you.
I'm going to hit the file storage limit without ever having a file attached
to a post.
It looks like that is happening on posts that trigger the spam filter.
If you have fewer than 25 posts and you post a URL or attempt to upload an attachment then the forum system will examine your post to score it against all of the cell-phone, psp, and other assorted spam that we've been getting.
If it scores it as possible spam than the thread is moderated until a mod or admin can look at it - visible to mods but not to the general public.
The error message needs to be cleaned up, but then again I don't want the penny-per-post sweatshops to then start putting up 25 nonsense posts so that they can then post their spam link....
This fencing.net site is so frustrating. I set up two accounts (Faire and Faire 2) trying to be able to figure out how to post.
It's impossible to figure out.......Last night I finally posted a new thread (Faire), only to be unable to reply to it. Since I had managed to "edit" a typo out of this thread (Faire 2), I tried to "edit" in my reply. Well..... that's when the post that started the thread disappeared. Talk about frustrating!

you're posting just fine.
the problem is that you're just flying in out of the blue with attachments and links. to a computer, that looks suspiciously like someone trying to spam or do something malicious.
solution:
1) contribute more to the community before you try making new threads
2) don't start a thread with links or attachments.
I've got a couple of other things to have the designer who did this skin track down, but then I'll be adding some messages/reminders on the posting forms for those who are not yet qualified to post attachments or links so that there is less confusion.
Noodle hit it straight on the head - If your first post to the board is a link, then it looks like spam. (We used to catch 5-10 "buy a cell phone" or "cheap PSP" posts a day with this tool until the Indian/Pakistani Internet posting sweatshop centers figured out that they can't get links on this board.)
Is the spam filter catching some "good" posts - yes. Is it catching the spam posts - yes.
Can the error messages be improved? Yes, and that's what we'll work on.

Thanks; a warning against attachments in a first post would be useful. Also, useful would be info as to how many posts are need prior to using attachments.

I probably won't do that since then the $0.50/hour worker in Hydrobad will then know how many nonsense posts they need to make in order to get around the filter and get their commission for posting their "buy my cell phone" link.
There will be something that will let you know when you can post something.
The general rule is - become an active member and contribute to the community. If all you're here to do is post a link, then it probably won't last too long anyway.
