Rebecca Ward Hi,
I tried searching for more information, interviews and videos on Rebecca Ward but I haven't found a site with sufficient information (something like a blog or at least something that updates on Rebecca Ward). She's accomplished so much at such a young age (same age as I am but not as accomplished ) and I'd like to learn more about her.
Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks . -
Why do I have the feeling that this going to end up with several injured hostages and a long time in prison? -
There were videos on fencingchannel.tv that I recall watching. She has several mentions in American Fencing. If you do a search on this forum you'll find a lot of commentary. Anything else? -

Array Here is a video clip link: Rebecca Ward vs. Sada Jacobson
Sada Jacobson is on the left and Rebecca Ward is on the right in this sabre bout. -

Hey now people, can we blame someone for be interested in an attractive, accomplished member of their own age cohort? Besides I'm pretty sure that the young lady in question lurks aboot, if she wants she can decide to contact you with a bio, 8x10 glossy and blog link. Otherwise you'll have to wait for her memoirs or ask more specific (but less creepy) questions. What clubs did she attend? How many lessons a week? How long did it take her to find success at tournaments? etc. I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Get your minds out of the gutter.

It's rare that anyone ever actually cares in saber. I'm pretty sure I've never heard a saber fencer ask someone to move their hair off of the lame. Saber fencers in general are much more concerned about the consistency and correctness of call hence it would seem that the weapon self selects slightly for refs that probably won't card for everything but are more concerned about the action at hand. Array Yes. Even the referees only bother when the FOC is riding them about it. I saw a lot of ponytails and braids down the backs of lamés in the WS in Tucson last weekend. I guess it wasn't the 'rule du jour'. ( Not sure what was; it wasn't "salute from the guard lines", either. ) Use the Shift key, people! By an amazing coincidence, never, though, when their fencer is ahead.

Oddly enough NOT breaking up the momentum of the bout is the answer you'd most likely get as to why a lot of saber officials don't card for stuff. Perhaps there's a market equilibrium on how often girls would put their hair up voluntarily if more coaches broke up bouts for it? I now dangle to the left....my tassle. Array Directors may not card all the time, but WS fencers certainly notice whose hair is covering and who's not, and make catty comments.
"look at how much target she's covering, she clearly has no idea what she's doing..."
"I can't believe she's complaining about that girl covering target--- does she plan on hitting the girl on back near her neck??"
I don't tend to care unless it flops forward onto the front of the lame............ -

Usually in local tournaments that I'm reffing, I will point out to a fencer that their hair is covering target and/or is a hazard to fencing. Almost always they will secure it. But then, I tend to be a stickler on such things as hair, socks, weapons checks, etc....

Go figure. so, maybe one should keep their hair up in order to avoid giving opposing coaches that opportunity...

-m Oh, come on! Since when is common sense ever gonna have a place in fencing? Though I do think that the opponent should be aware enough to notice a huge wad of hair blocking target area. If not, then I suggest that they may have part of the reason why they're losing.... The Stalwart Panda

Which is why most of the better sabrists have adopted "the bun": a large wad of hair so tightly compacted at the back of the head that not only does it frequently interfere with mask placement, it has been known to create a vortex shockwave of air displacement when unbound too quickly.
Still, some hair can get loose from time to time, and then you're right back in the "wait for the right moment" of coachal finger pointing. "Sometimes we, as coaches, get into that dictator mode where you just tell and you don't listen and you don't try to understand them." Tom Izzo, Mich. St.

. Please use proper terminology, it is called the "hair ball."
