| Alabama, Mississippi, Western FL fencing? I was just checking askfred and noticed that there is a severe lacking of tournaments around AL, MS, and western FL area. There's some clubs listed on fencing.net, but I see no tournaments. Granted, we're not necessarily in the peak of fencing season, but I figured there'd be something out that way.
Is there not much fencing out there, or is this area of the country just not using askfred? (namely Birmingham)
Problem is, if I want to go to a strong tournament, I'm forced to drive into Texas (not complaining). I was just curious if one time I could go east and find some competitions.

| June 9-10 There will be a 3-weapon tournament (Open on Saturday, Y12 on Sunday) at the Birmingham Fencing Club on June 9-10, 2007. Information should be posted to AskFred this weekend. I believe it will be a strong tournament but you can track that on 'Fred. |

| I've noticed that Central Florida division & Gatweay FL. division tournaments often don't use Fred. No idea why… |

if you want tournaments in that area, you'll have to go to atlanta. its usually more active there...then again i haven't lived in that area since '05. |

| Yeah, tell me about it. It's mostly due to the lack of fencers in our area, as well as the relative lack of competitveness. For instance, if I were to hold a tournament in Oxford, I could get maybe 8 fencers from my club to participate. The next closest group is in Memphis, about an hour and a half away, and most of them don't travel to tournaments. After that, we have Jackson, MS, which is about two and a half hours. They would maybe get 7 or 8 fencers on a good day. The rest of our division is mostly in Shreveport, which is close to 6 hours away, and again most of these fencers do not travel to far away tournaments.
So there are only two clubs in MS, and not many more in AL. Arkansas has a few active fencers as well. We do use askfred however.

| Alabama used to have a lot of tournaments, but from what I've heard, their division has been having some issues that are getting resolved.

| I lived in Pensacola (Florida panhandle) back in 1998-1999 for flight training. Really a woeful lack of fencing in that area. There was a small club at UWF but it lacked a coach and I was too much of a snob at the time to want to fence with "novices." (I have since changed my attitude.) I sincerely hope that fencing has grown down there since then but I don't know. Even if there is a club down there you'd have to do a serious amount of driving to get to tournaments. |

From their website: The University of West Florida Fencing Renaissance Style Fencing Club
Salle McAfee
Period style fencing taught by Douglas Rusinsko who was taught by the former club instructor, Ron McAfee, who was kill in a car accident (Jan. 2005.) We study rapier as it was in the Renaissance era with shlager and other replica blades rather than standard 3 modern weapons (foil, epee, and sabre). We emphasize chivalry, honor, and camaraderie.
Going back to Glowstix's remarks, the dearth of events does not explain why those few events in the area tend not to use Fred. |

I was really hoping there was some fencing near Pensacola. It'd be great to make a weekend out of fencing and the beach.

| Perhaps the division could encourage the use of FRED among members.
I found another UWF site but I don't know if it's still active: http://uwf.edu/fencing/ |

| Hello. I am from the UWF fencing club. The website you found was from our old club that has been disbanded. It was the old olympic-style club. The new fencing club that has been started is a Renaissance-style fencing club. We don't have an official webpage per se, but here is a website I created if you would like some information on our club. http://www.sallemcafee.50megs.com/
my email address is jaydewizard@cox.net
Let me know if there are any questions I can answer! |

| Central FL does have tournaments. It's just that most of them are advertised by flyers and word-of-mouth. Which is probably why we never get fencers from other states to come.
I would tell you to check our division website because it usually has a good calendar, but it hasn't been updated since december, so don't bother. |

| All of the upcoming tournaments are on there, i think. The only ones left for this season are the Dunedin Open, D-Day, and the Sunshine State Games.
The flyers for Dunedin and D-day are on the site. Sunshine State Games info and registration are here: http://www.flasports.com/page_sunshi...inggames.shtml |
